Plump Helmet Man Reserve
« on: July 04, 2010, 07:03:36 am »

So, finding the plump helmet men too cute for words, and having caught three in cages, I've dug out a little reserve for them.  Sheer-sided walls so no escaping, a little viewing platform for dorfs to enjoy them.  The reserve has a pool of clean water, and muddied floors producing underground plants.

Do Plump Helmet Men need to eat?  I've already lost a Tigerman to starvation when I left him in a cage by mistake; I've dropped some food down there, and put a stockpile under it.

I'm hoping they will breed; there is a female.  Anyone else had any experience keeping reserves of sentients?  Are PHM sentient?

Not in the same sense as tigermen and dwarves. They shouldnt need to eat/drink.

Reminds me of the Mitch Hedberg joke about catching a frog in a jar and putting a twig and a leaf in it to recreate what it's used to.

I'd find them cute too, if I hadn't read City of Saints and Madmen. I find them... sinister.

Also, yes. They won't starve.

That's a relief.  I might chuck some other cave wildlife down there to recreate the area.  I've got crundles, elk birds and dratha... might put some draltha and elk birds down.  Also have a floating guts, but decaging that would probably be a mistake, I'm thinking!

Well, you could always save them for the goblin prisoners.

Edit the raws to make them require food, and then give them only plump helmets to eat.

What are you, an elf?

make a small room entirely out of steel, and fill it with 3/7 or 4/7 water.
Under this room, have another steel chamber filled with wood logs.
Pit a fire imp into the section filled with logs, have him ignite them.
boil the plump helmet men into a delicious soup, add dimple cups and kitten meat to taste.

Mmmm... plump helmet man soup.

I'm still waiting to see if anyone mods them to be edible and farmable, with plump helmet wine for blood!
