Whats your favorite embark biome?
« on: July 03, 2010, 10:27:23 pm »

Just curious where everyone likes to embark most.

I prefer cold or freezing biomes. Glaciers because I can actually smooth/engrave the entire surface of the glacier. I just like the idea of building a gigantic fortress in a desolate, frozen wasteland. Make it a terrifying glacier and its even more FUN.

Glaciers as well, though I like to be close enough to the arctic oceans to get some walrus pets.

Taigas with aquifers. So I can do fun stuff with water and ice.

...Are frozen biomes going to be a favorite amongst DF players?

When I'm playing not for a specific megaconstruction, it's normally deserts or something of the like.... A large flat area with a lot of space to play around.

That or sheer cliffs. I have a 100 zlevel sheer cliff with 180+ zlevels below the "ground level" It's something like 300 something zlevels in total.

I suggest you don't think too much what you build and where. When ever you need something, build it as close as possible to where you need it. that way your fortress will eventually become epic

Mountain because uh... they're dwarfs.
It's got to be a split biome, though, because I need trees.
Mountain/forest is good.

Tropical oceans. I always build my forts over them, and they provide me with everything I need. Wood, fish, shells, sand, stone etc.

Deserts. My main exports are clear glass goblets studded with all sorts of wonderful things.

Swamps.  Because... swamps!

...some amount of hills preferred because completely flat terrain is a bit boring.

Anywhere, so long as its terrifying.

Which usually ends up being focused on glaciers, these days.

Anywhere that's got glumprongs and werewolves. Which probably narrows it down to evil-temperate forests.

I like forests the best... but the more I think about it, ti's only because I'm a lazy sob that doesn't want to bother with 2000 floors of magma pumps.
If I can find a volcano I'll go anywhere.

Taiga.

I like the photos. They look like they smell fresh.

Also, whenever I put my dwarves in a warm place, I feel like they're always sweating, reeking and being gross everywhere.
