To those who would complain that a stone bed is uncomfortable: Try sleeping on a bed made entirely out of wood!

That can actually be made quite comfortable. Start with a frame, then add some cane, which is reasonably flexible and sturdy. Add a wood pillow, or if you're feeling exotic--and a little lenient on our definition of "wood"--make a pillow stuffed with bamboo (I have two, I love them, softest damned things ever, but without being overly poofy--though I should repuff them, they're getting a little condensed). Voila, 100% pure wood beds (though you still might want a blanket).

well... in this case, i guess sand "pillows" could make a stone bed comfortable too... ;)

Also: While not comfortable, sleeping in a chair is preferable to sleeping on the ground. Dwarves could do that if there's no other option available. Obviously, it wouldn't make them happy; but it wouldn't make them as unhappy as sleeping on the floor, either.
I'm sorry, but i find it incredibly more confortable to sleep on a hard floor than in a chair. Actually, i would even rather sleep on a rug than on a couch. Japanese people don't seem to have a problem with that (yeah yeah, i know they don't call them rugs… ;) )

I prefer even sitting on the floor to sitting in a chair. Much less sleeping in one. So yes, how comfortable certain surfaces are for sleeping is a varying matter of preference.

Well, stone beds might be uncomfortable, but I would rather prefer to sleep on stone bed, than on blood, vomit and dirt covered floor infested with cave spiders...

I have seen this topic multiple times and my opinion still is the same you can have any "frame" but a bag of sand or a other fluffy object in a bag for the actual mattress.

I've suggested before, and will suggest again, that bedrooms ought to be assignable from other furniture besides beds. Furniture like cabinets, coffers, rugs (I really want rugs).
Beds are only made of wood. Stone beds alerady exist, every tile of your fortress, hah. Sleeping on the floor is sleeping on a stone bed. However, if we could install a cabinet in a room, assign it a bedroom and then give it to a dwarf .. they'll sleep there and get a nice thought about sleeping in a bedroom along with a thought about sleeping on the floor. Also, gives him a place to store things, like discarded shoes and coins.
Oh, and rugs made of cloth/silk/leather would make the best wooden bed substitutes, in my opinion .. and stay kinda balanced, cause making leather and cloth is a little more complex than either masonry or carpentry. And they serve other, decorative purposes .. and maybe help with dwarves spamming mud.

Woo! I had good ideas in 2007. Goona have to run a search whether a Rug/Tapestry suggestion exist or maybe start a new one!

Speaking of stone beds being impractical - has anybody here ever seen a functional stone door?

I might have. I do have a memory of one in my head. It's certainly possible, though; you'd just have to make it slightly thicker (depending on stone type) and you'd have to make the hinges in a different way than you would for a wooden/metal/both door.

To those who are suggesting sandbag matresses and pillows, they're not as comfortable as beaches might lead you to think.

Once your weight compresses the sand, you are essentially sitting on a bag of stone.

However, the compressed sand do fit around your head/body pretty well. Generally discomfort from sleeping on flat, hard surface is that all your weight is supported by a few points on your body.

One of the toads decided to go for a swim in the moat - presumably because he could path through the moat to my dwarves. He is not charging in, just loitering in the moat.

The toad is having a nice relaxing swim.
The goblin mounted on his back, however, is drowning.

Pretty much. You have to make the weight balanced in such a way that the user doesn't have to move all the weight manually.

(This, of course, reminded me of the one Hunter x Hunter episode where Gon (etc) travel to Killua's family's mansion and the GIANT stone gates which take raw muscle power to open. The gates are a series of doors within doors, the smallest of which was something like 1 ton worth of weight. Somehow it was possible to open all 7 sets of doors at the same time by pushing in the same place...if you were strong enough).

I'd make them turn on massive half spherical bottoms. Dwarves probably can balance them so precisely, that they turn at the slightest touch. For that half their weight ought to be on either side, so you get a thin slab of stone as the door, and a fat part opposite of the turning point to keep them in balance.
