People are still willing to pay the full $800 for the PS3 in the Gulf (of the Mediterranean, not of Mexico). It's a more powerful and sturdier machine than the Xbox, in my opinion, so I didn't mind paying $100 more than the Xbox 360 would have cost me in order to get all the neat features (I'm watching episodes of True Blood that I have stored on my computer by streaming them to the PS3 and onto my TV. Does the 360 allow this?) and the peace of mind that hardware failure is significantly less likely.

I had somebody try to tell me I was silly for purchasing the PS3 instead of the 360 once (people often do this with their consoles, as we all know. I think a lot of them are just trying to validate a purchase, though) by telling me that there are very few things available on the PS3 that aren't available on the 360. And I'm actually perfectly fine with that, because the reverse is true, as well (especially very recently). Comparing the exclusives of both consoles, I prefer the ones on the PS3 anyways (Little Big Planet or Heavy Rain vs Halo or Fable II?).

I was a bit skeptical about the PS3's quality when it first came out and it cost a thousand dollars, but I haven't regretted purchasing it in late November of 2009, especially after discovering how great it is for movies and other non-game media. My biggest complaint is that I can't figure out how to play music on shuffle, and the animation that plays during music (either a shimmering coloured screen or the Planet Earth) is kind of boring.

Even still, I can see why it is selling so well now. It's a pretty good console, easily worth the original price. I have it hooked up to a 30 year old television set and it still feels like I'm living in luxury.

I don't understand why some people choose never to install firmware on it, though. The patches have only made my experience better. I don't think I'm missing anything by not being able to install Linux.

On the Wii: I bought a Wii about 2 or 3 years ago, and it's kind of a mixed bag. It's fun and great for parties, especially when you have people who aren't really into video games present (which is a bit foreign to some Bay12ers, I realize, but try to step into my shoes), but it's also not that great for actual gaming. The only game I thought was really worthwhile was Super Mario Galaxy (haven't tried SMG2), which I played to 100% completion on. I think it's a different kind of gaming machine, though, one made more for families and casual players as opposed to somebody whose primary hobby and past time is playing video games, and there's nothing wrong with that. It sells better for exactly this reason, too. It's very appealing to people who have never played video games before, including people who think they're too old to play a video game. Have you ever seen a group of 40 to 50 year old bearded men gather around a TV to play WiiGolf? It's good stuff.

Unfortunately, due to a lack of income and time I have been neglecting my gaming, at least with the consoles. However, I've played a few games on there that were fun. The Metroid game was a biggie, that was fun. IIRC, isn't Team Ninja doing a new Metroid game for the Wii.

Also, how does one define actual gaming?

As playing a game.

Though, when people talk about being a 'gamer', I think they're referring to people who sit down and play a video game for several hours at a time, typically play the games all the way through, and spend a good portion of their free time playing video games.

Quite true on the PS3 there. The 360 was ok, but between you and me, I find the PS3 to be far more reliable then it, plus alternative features here and there (hell, you can run linux on a ps3 and use it as a server if you want). The price tag is a bit bitter, but in comparison to the 360, it was well worth the price. Plus the exclusives are nice, Demon's Souls was a blast to play, and its online support is pretty solid.

I only played the Wii on my friend's house, and its fun if you have people (that you stand) to play with you, and just like you said, its not for someone who actualy has the habit of playing games for pure personal enjoyment. This is why I'm turned off by it.
Its nice that nintendo's supposedly going to advance into that territory, but so far I've seen nothing good enough to make me go and buy a Wii. Another reason to why I'm turned off by the Wii is that its games seems to be based more on the Wiimote then the game themselves. Seriously, 75% of all Wii games just beg for you to use the Wiimote instead of actualy giving you some gameplay depth. That also makes playing other games which weren't made with the Wiimote in mind (Monster Hunter 3, I'm looking at you), utterly frustrating, seriously, if you don't have the Wii gamepad for those games, the whole gameplay goes down the gutter.

Yeah, but according to True Blood, 200 year old Vampires play Wii.

For $800, you can get yourself a rather good computer. As an added bonus, it does more than play games and stream video.

You've been an asshole lately, G-Flex; why don't you take a break from going on forums for awhile and enjoy the summer air?

On a more serious note, you'll be hard pressed to find a computer for $800 which will act as a media center of equal quality to the PS3.

Its odd that she plays the Wii, considering everyone around her is either dying or being turned into mindless monsters, and the only guy who's with her 100% of the time is only interested in hitting people with a portable coffin to protect her.

MY WEEABOO TASTES ASIDE, indeed, if you really want a PC that can truly surpass the current generation's consoles, you need to spend considerably more then that.

I'm curious. In what way?

Also, my larger point there was that you get a full-fledged good personal computer out of the deal, not just a box that plays videogames (or acts as a media center, for that matter).

Don't spoil it for me, I'm only up to Episode 9 or 10 of Season 1.

I have no idea how much my computer cost, because I received it as a gift, years ago. It's just an Acer laptop from 2004 (seriously), and it probably cost more than I would have spent for it. I want to hit it with sledgehammers until it turns into little toxic splinters.

@Grakelin: OH YOU WOULD NEVER GUESS WHO GETS RAPED AND DIESSorry.

Aaaaanyway, have a look at Alienware's laptops and desktops, those surpass the current consoles, and are worth a pretty penny. I shall buy one of their monolithic laptops one day.

Alienware is really, really, really overrated. They rely on brand name and shininess, and cater to the ELITE GAMER market, and make a damn fortune off of it, I'm sure.

My information could be outdated, but as in any case, you'd be a fool not to shop around for systems with equivalent hardware (or the hardware itself) in order to make sure you aren't getting ripped off to begin with. That's just standard practice, or at least should be.

Gentleman, calm down. Relax.

Dakk: You have to buy a peripheral, which costs less then $20, and you consider that a failing of the Wii? You can buy 4 remotes, 4 nunchuks, and 4 gamepads for the Wii for the same price as 4 360 or PS3 controllers. Doesn't seem so bad when its put that way.

Edit: I forgot to mention. Online play is free with the Wii. Other consoles you have to pay for it.

@G-Flex: Gateway and Lenovo offer similar hardware, though gateway is also pretty expensive, and Lenovo isn't completely up to the challenge, but it gets close enough and is considerably cheaper. Whenever I buy my next laptop, it'll most likely be a Lenovo.

@beorn: Wut, I didn't say it completely ruined the Wii by itself, it was part of the argument that Wii games tend to love the Wiimote too much, with their development pointed towards creating fun stuff to do with the Wiimote rather then creating an interesting game.

Also, eh, were did you get the idea that online play is p2p on the PS3 and 360? Unless you're talking about some obscure MMO, then I'll have to disagree, I played tons of PS3 games online without having to pay a penny.
