I have no idea what you mean by that. Most indie games exist independent of the mainstream market, and aren't even implicitly supported by it.

Slightly tangential to the actual cut of the thread, but I find this this article about the rise of "casual" gaming to be fairly enlightening.

I dont care really, all I need is those indie games that pop up every so often.

Indy gamers live off the fat of the main stream market.

With the main stream market, there are no indy game makers.

I don't understand, first off I think we are throwing indie around too much.
Right now indie games are benefits because the hardware the indie games need is a byproduct of the mainstream market, for example with no Xbox, there would be no xbla which the indie market is making a kill of right now, however such a think would not exist with out the mainstream, is that what we are saying?

Entertaining and educational. I really liked it.

OT: Nintendo is learning, albeit slowly. For example, the Cave Story port.

Hehe, just read that article. Man makes sense.

Vert: Nintedo is relearning. They were the kings. Then they fell, and looked back to see what changed. They're just doing the same things they did with the NES. Simplify and expand.

Tsh, I shoudn't even be online, stupid flu catching up, but I suck at resting. Anyway, thats a very nice article there, read it fully and liked it quite a bit, but I still fail to see nintendo as the new era overlord of gaming, almighty, unchallenged. Its indeed a very insightful article but I can't help but to raise an eyebrow at how he seems to depict nintendo as a ingenious inventor and sony and microsoft as passionless power hungry executives who have done few things other then copying nintendo and trying to ride along the "casual" game wave.

Considering his sources, his argument is well founded, and Nintendo sure is rising from the aparent hole it was stuck in during the first months of the Wii, but I woundn't go as far as to say Sony and Microsoft are unable to stand like equals to Nintendo, if it really is rising again.

I agree with everything else, just sorta skeptic towards his Nintendo will take over the gaming world! Hear ye infidels! argument.

The odd thing is, Nintendo pretty much invented the gaming industry in the first place. Yes, there was the Atari, but the NES really brought out console gaming.

From what I've seen, Nintendo was never stuck in a hole. Lets face it, the Wii is still the most purchased console out there. There is a reason you could find PS3s in stores far earlier then you could find Wii's, and I don't think it was market saturation.

IIRC, in the very start, IE the first months of the current generation of consoles, the Xbox was winning the race, while the Wii was still catching up and the PS3 was in the gutter. In the long run the Wii won by far, which proves his point with a golden pin. What I'm really skeptical about is nintendo going strong enough to kick anyone else from the game market. That nintendo is experiencing a veritable return from its 64 times is pure fact, I'm just keeping myself from jumping into the all hail our renewed nintendo overlords bandwagon untill nintendo starts acting on what the writer calls "the hardcore field", mainly because thats the kind of games I'm mostly into, because I'm a gritty person who is not a great fan of playing with other, physical people :P

I'd say the Xbox won by people. PS3 didn't really get bought because of the insane fucking pricetag.

Mainly because, say, it was released before the other two.
And there are already rumours that microsoft is rushing its update to the 360 for early 2011.
