Personally, I hope it dies off a little. As it is, no major company has had problems. I think if someone like EA or the Xbox division or another major player went under or had a serious setback, it would encourage the rest to listen to gamers again.

Just because none of the major companies has managed to go bankrupt in the last few years doesn't mean they don't face challenges. Ubisoft has been in the red for a little while now, and EA has closed down certain studios (which a company only does if their product isn't making money).

Also the reason why a lot of companies are still going strong is because they deliver games that people want to buy. Let's face it, Bay12 Elite gamers arn't a big enough market to make a difference, especially not considering most of us don't want to spend more then 15 bucks on a game.

You fail for not figuring out that I was being sarcastic because the film industry is still going strong.
because the very young game industry being in the same state as the large, longstanding film industry isn't a bad thing?

I hope the game industry sticks around, it's the industry I want to be a part of in a couple years, once I'm out of college. I can't have it collapsing on me, you know. :P

It will be just like the film industry, where they all stopped making money because there were so many bad movies.

Movies have been doing well.

Especially during a recession.

But, there are also abandonware elite gamers. One site is putting together a boycott of ea.

I honestly don't understand most of the hate that's thrown at MMO's. I really enjoyed some of the popular ones back in the day, and even the free ones aren't ALL bad.. just sort of bad.

In fact some of my most fond gaming experiences have taken place in MMO's. I played Everquest 2 at a young age and eventually moved to WoW, and I switched between the two off and on for about four years. There is just so many good things to say about these games, however the payment method is NOT one of them. The reason I loved MMO's so much back then was because I wasn't paying for them. When I did start paying, though, I almost immediately canceled my subscriptions. If the subscription was, say, 3 dollars a month, I might still go with it.. but that would never happen, EVER. Especially with Sony and Blizzard.

So yeah, the money part of MMO's is the one thing that I hate immensely, and I can understand if other people hate them for that too. But the late-gameplay in most of these games is actually super fun, especially if you have a friendly group of people to play with. There's really very little in the gaming market that can copy that flavor of fun.

i think the era of big dev studios producing games like Modern Warfare on repeat may eventually stall out. I dont think it will crash because theres always more people getting into games, and there will alsways be a market for run of the mill games with state of the art graphics etc ( i assume there will because there has always been a fairly strong market for action movies with no originality or plot).

Having said this, globally as game console and pc ownership increases in other parts of the world there could be a wider customer base. In the west however i can see major game sales plateauing and the larger companies finding it difficult to grow.

Standard commercial gaming is something I can see facing a crash in the near future. The development practices are simply nonsustainable. Productions costs are rising, which has been somewhat offset by higher prices and a broader market, but those are about at their limits now, or damn close. This also helps stifle innovation, since you can't take creative risks when you need to appeal to everyone in order to turn a profit, or when the production costs are so high that the amount of financial risk involved becomes too much for it to be worth experimenting.

Consoles themselves are getting to be quite insane for similar reasons, not to mention the fact they're converging on the functionality of (weird, gimpy) personal computers. Manufacturing costs are high, prices are high, and of the two super-high-end current consoles (XBox 360 and PS3), one of them had completely absurd failure rates for a long time, and if what one of my friends is telling me is true, doesn't even process video (in the recent hardware revisions) particularly well, although the details are things I've yet to confirm. The "it just works" factor that consoles rely on is also fading away; I've even seen cases of a game not working on a console because the version of the console's software wasn't compatible.

So yeah, I see a serious market upset coming. I don't think it'll affect the casual games market as much, though, just your standard mainstream Call Of Madden 2012: The Sands of War III type stuff.

For the film analogy, if there's one thing Avatar proved it's that you don't need stories, more than one likable character, originality, or really anything that isn't eye candy and/or a tired, overdone abortion of an Aesop.

Because by GOD if the racism becomes overwhelming JUST MAKE IT SHINIER.

Meh, EA's fine. Aside from Spore and their DRM they're completely fine. Hey, Modern Warfare was totally fine and exemplary, I really liked the game.

This. I have NEVER understood why this happened. There should be NO need to patch your consoles, ever. This was the stupidest thing that the companies did. New features, fine. Even bugfixes for new features, fine. NEVER EVER EVER to get the games to run. EVER.

I dont care really, all I need is those indie games that pop up every so often.

Indy gamers live off the fat of the main stream market.

With the main stream market, there are no indy game makers.
