Note:This is not a place to post your opinions on the way games are made, just the economics and how it's going to be affected in the future.

Personally I think games will thrive, and learn from previous mistakes in the future. Many see a market crash, but I do not.

I think the mainstream industry is going nowhere fast.

It concentrates too much on mindless repetition of successful titles and seeking for gimmicks than actual innovation.

Then again innovative design is covered by indie developers, but they are unlikely to make much commercial success and get mimicked by the AAA titles.

This.

I doubt the gaming industry is in any real danger of crashing, some people are buying games no matter how crappy we believe them to be after all.

In any case, I doubt it'll matter too much. If a company keeps making crappy games, I just don't buy them. If said companies go down, it won't bother me because I never bought any of their games anyway. Companies are out to make money, between a generic title that takes minimal time/money and still scrapes a profit and a great game that takes years to design and takes several million dollars to fund; the choice is pretty obvious.

If the big companies go down, others will come up to fill the hole. It's not like the game designers die if the company goes down, there'll be other outlets if their designing abilities are in demand; and it flushes out crappy designers.

Plus, it means more opportunities for indie creators to make some profit and get their games seen. Selling a game at $3 to 100,000 people is much better than selling it at $30 to 10,000 people. Word of mouth (and post) brings in more attention, and thus more prospective customers.

The premise of that article, that gamers get bored of things and want new gimmicks every few years, is utter BS.

Also: arcades didn't die because people got bored with them and wanted a new gimmick. Arcades were all about new gimmicks.

The game industry isn't ever going to die, though it might change considerably from what it is today. I wouldn't hold your breath though, as both the music and movie industries are being kept from having to change by aggressive litigation and legislation.

It will be just like the film industry, where they all stopped making money because there were so many bad movies.

It's probably going to be fine for a long while, but I think Microsoft and Sony are going to lose money on their motion sensing stuff.

Better question: If the game market crashed, would anyone at Bay12 care?

I wouldn't mind if the MMO market died. Those things are more parasites than games.

Which is terrible, because the film industry at least got to mature. Game Industry is like 40 years old max, and it's already dying - and has been for about ten years I figure, and has crashed at least twice. It's like a baby getting dropped down a flight of stairs twice before it can walk.  :-X

Oh well, no big loss to me, really. Computer Science degrees can be used for other things  8)

You fail for not figuring out that I was being sarcastic because the film industry is still going strong.

Very much so, films have been going strong for a good while now. Research plx.

Also, were is this supposed video game crisis comming from? From what I see not much has changed since 2 years ago. Yes we're seeing alot of crappy titles but people are still buying, and there's a few gems here and there. I have indeed noticed a decline in quality, but nothing severe enough to be considered a crash like the one from atari's time.
Hell, even the MMO market is going strong, due to the advent of online console gaming and the popularization of mini transactions.

Over dramatisation of a trivial decline, I say. This kind of thing starts to happen after a generation of consoles has been going on for this long.

EDIT: Anyway, on the motion sensing stuff, I'm forced to quote Yahtzee on this: "You should not be afraid of change, but you should resist it", or something like that. The motion sensing stuff might be the future and stuff and etc. But if it really is supposed to represent such a breakthrough, they should stop making it into something gimmicky and start having some serious ideas.
Sorta quoting Yahtzee again, games should not be about controllers, games should be about games. It doesn't matter if your controller has 100 supposedly awesome functions, if the game you use it with sucks ass.

Personally, I hope it dies off a little. As it is, no major company has had problems. I think if someone like EA or the Xbox division or another major player went under or had a serious setback, it would encourage the rest to listen to gamers again.
