Can someone give a new attributes system explaination?

Specifically, is there any way to gain attributes without making all my units into champions by training them just to make them have a little more endurance for hauling?

I'm saying this because currently, apparently, all attribute gain is done through military skill training.  Even the "soul" attributes, which seems absurd, and frankly, like an outright bug.  A search for "attribute" didn't seem to turn up anything very useful for some odd reason, and the wiki's attribute page is still worthless.

Can I make a weapon that uses some odd skill that wouldn't make me become a hero at some point, so I can still use them as civilians?  Because this seems pretty ridiculous...

Why thank you.

And as far as skills with weapons go, there should be no reason it shouldn't work. Miner's picks use the MINING skill in attacking, and there's mods that will use odd skills, such as concentration or dodging as being the skill attached to that weapon. As for it being a workaround for raising mental attributes, I actually don't anyone did tests trying that out, but it would be interesting to see.
