"Hallo. I am Russian immigrant. I trained in Lenigrad to study nuclear forwen polizee. I want to werk for zee See-Eye-Ai."

Yeah, that would raise some flags. I think the innocent jobs was a good idea.

Yeah the point of being a spy is to not seem like your actually a spy.

Also: Another TF2 joke and we'll be pushing it...

Yes, they should definately try to look innocent, but doing so to the point where you won't learn anything at all...

And why all the bizarre ways of passing information?  You could just send it by email and pretend it's emails home or something.

It just gets better and better!

They were encoding secret message in seemingly innocuous image files on the 'net. Which now that I think about it, would make for an awesome forum game...

I'm not sure if you were being sarcastic.. but that's quite old technology. I actually applied for a research job on doing stuff like that. Changing like the first bit of every picture gives only minor distortion to the picture that's not perceptible to the human eye. Similarly, you could encode data very, very successfully in speech files because people are used to listening to speech with noise and can't tell the difference.

Another fun spy trick - create an email address. Give your spy buddy the password. Don't send out emails to your buddy. Just draft an email and save it. Your buddy would then log in, read the draft and reply with another draft. It keeps your data safe from any packet sniffing attempts. Doesn't keep them from hacking into Hotmail and stuff, but an extra layer of safety.

I'd commit high treason to get some of that sexy agent.

I was not going to go there, but I think I will very earnestly and helpfully suggest to you that I think they keep them in San Fransico bay.

Today I learned I an unsure how to spell Francisco.

Probably conspiracy to commit treason or something equivalent.

Not treason if you're not a citizen. Which means we better try that US citizen Times Square bomber with treason or else I'm going to be fuming. I also anticipate someone to link me an article that will throw me into a rage. They'll probably just get charged with espionage.

Nope.  All they're getting charged with is being unregistered agents of a foreign government, which adds insult to their injury of being totally ineffective.  Except that one guy in Cyprus -- he's "wanted in the U.S. on charges he supplied money to the spy ring," although I don't know what the actual charge is.

only 11 you cant not even have some one tailed with that number.
(you need a good 40 men toi do it right)

rember that jobs in nuclear or defense have back ground checks, pretty girls in bars dont.

I do have to wonder what these spies were actually supposed to accomplish.  Apparently they were just supposed to integrate into American society and befriend government and defense contract workers to try to peal secrets out of them.  Which is a considerably lower caliber of espionage than I expect from the goddamn Russians.
Richard Sorge did just that.

Who knows, maybe the ineffective ones are meant to distract from the real spies?

I don't know if espionage is normally practiced like that though.
