Underwater tiles considered "indoors"
« on: June 29, 2010, 04:13:01 am »

Essentially, all tiles containing 7/7 units of water should be considered indoors even when not covered by constructions or rock. This will mean that during the winter, only the surface of the water will freeze over, forming an ice floor, whereas the water underneath remains liquid. Due to the insulating properties of ice, this makes physical sense.

Having only the surface of the water freeze over will also prevent the extinction of local marine wildlife every winter when the river/lake/ocean is frozen solid.

Note that glacial areas will not be affected at all as indoor temperatures there are already below zero.

The resulting party killed 20 dwarves, crippled 2 more and the remaining 9 managed to get along and have a nice party.

I like that idea. It would bring the realism of how bodies of water freeze over, as you said, plus it would make it slightly easier to survive on non-glacial cold maps. I second this.

Assuming they are multiple tiles deep. Instead of the top layer itself freezing, it could become covered in floor tiles made of ice. Freezing of whole tiles, even multiple layers, could still happen in the excessively low temperatures of freezing and sometimes cold biomes.

A good addition to have after one can dyke a river, because waiting for a river to freeze over is the few ways to dam a river otherwise.
