Generally speaking it all depends where the people are situated...

Human Pets that Existed at one point
-Fennic Fox*
-Red Fox*
-Grey Fox* (Yay Russia!)
-Horse*
-Dog*
-Wolf
-Lion
-Tiger
-Bear
-Pig*
-Goat*
-Turkey
-Chicken*
-Cat*
-Ostrage* (Can never spell that)
-Monkey*
-Ape
-Cheetah* (Oddly this is I think the Largest Legal cat you can own in the USA)
-Squirl
-Flying Squirl*
-Llama*
-Camel*
-Opaka* (Or however you spell it)
-Elephant*
-Pony*
-Iquana*
-Groundhog*
-Mole
-Snake*

*: Animals that I know are pets in real life... Doesn't include caged

Simply Speaking... The animals that are available for Humans and Dwarves really should depend on where they live and what the game deems tamable or difficult to train. So if a human village lives in an area with a ton of bears, perhaps they could eventually domesticate them?

Insects, bugs, and others should be a special case though... You can't train them... You train yourself to guide them

You forgot "Lion" and "Bear."

I've seen both in the modern world (lived near a guy who had the former, there've been many news articles about the latter).

I think we should be careful about the line between domesticated and tame.

Domesticated and tame are not the same things. Tame means the animals will accept your presence but that is IT. For all intents and purposes they are still wild animals with all the inherent behaviors and instincts. Domesticated animals on the other hand have evolved into a form that is mostly dependent on us for survival.

A good way of describing the two is that if you happen to die out in the forest a domestic dog would go get help and a tame wolf would eat your corpse.

As for Dwarves riding on Rams... They are much too small to ride...

However just to be sure Ill check Wikipedia, despite how wrong it often is... which doesn't list their height...

And I can't get anything off google either...

Anyhow... too small

But let me check a goat... and nothing...

Gee, that looks kind of familiar...

My stray dogs often chase fire imps back into the magma pipe and then continue fighting while burning and drowning in the lava. Truly their loyalty knows no bounds, but perhaps it should.

Thats more like what I had in mind, only less demonic. As with most fantasy art the plate armour on that thing is very unrealistic. It looks to be more than an inch thick in some places. Medieval plate armour was at most a handful of millimeters thick in critical areas. Even then its weight could easily make the wearer keel over with exhaustion.

Lesser and hunting dogs would be fine with leather or chainmail. Only the biggest baddest dogs and the mounts would merit plate armour. Unless ALL your dogs are big and badass which works too  :D

That's computing gaming for you.  It's about as upsetting in context as watching giant robots surf on air in Eureka 7.

I have a term to sum up the whole thing. Its called "the rule of cool". It covers everything from heroes on a spaceship never wearing helmets (ala star trek and star wars), unrealistic armour and weapons, everything in between and a few things that aren't.

Id say that is such a cheap shot... but frankly that anime vomits on science or even semblence of reality so much that their Surfboards are just about the most realistic thing there.

ANYHOW...

I guess if you were able to train your animals to buff them up, which you should to some extent, then I guess your very strong dogs should get some of that platemail!

However... Platemail is well wasted on Dogs as it is...

Yeah, we need better and more detailed pets in general. Even if you could train war elephants, an elephant with a platform and balista on top is going to be very different compared to an armoured one that runs around tusking and stomping stuff.

War dogs and hunting dogs only differ in which body part they will first Om Nom Nom. For hunting dogs that would be the legs. War dogs would probably go for the face.

The Coolest Pets will be ones with hands... Imagine Equipping your Silverback Gorrilas with Axes and tricking them out with Platemail!

Yes indeed, once pet armors will be implemented, pet weapons must be also added. There will be lot of pets / tamed creatures capable of fighting with weapons. Just one example: Trolls -> War Trolls should be able to carry weapons + wear armors. Not to mention that with modding the possibilites would be endless!  8)
