What animal cavalry and pets would humans have? Horses and dogs are the only ones that seem to fit.

With dwarves they can use anything but horses because they can't fight very well from horseback and the horse can't fight on its own. Bear or giant dog cavalry works well, as does saddled boars. Ponies might work for scouting.

Goblins? Well, find a bag of horrors and pick one.

Camels and Elephants.  Ostriches if you're a sadist.  Ponies for humans and dwarves.  Mules and Donkeys

Days later, I look at the first post in the thread and realize this.

That's what I get for not reading a thread before posting in it.

I've done similar things.  Usually when I'm tired and haven't realized why the thread feels like deja vu.

Ok lets see..
Some basic ideas, non-fantasy creatures:

Human mounts & pets:
Horse - Warhorse
Dog - Wardog [only as pet]
Elephant - War Elephant
Camel - X [War Camel sounds quite bad  ;D]

Dwarf mounts & pets:
Ram - Armored Ram
Boar - War Boar
Bear - Armored Bear
Dog - Wardog [only as pet]

Armored Bear example pict.:

Giant rams are too WoW-esque.

Why not dogs as mounts? Dogs can be bred to a massive size even today. In DF the dogs would not domesticate to the degree where you would get poodles, they would remain far more wolf like and wild. And they would be much larger.

You only say WoW-esque, because you probably played WoW!  ;D
I think a dwarf looks good on a ram, thats why Ive listed it.  :)

..as for dogs..I dont know really. It just sounds weird to use dogs as mounts. Dogs are just too weak to carry a 60kg+ creature and run around with it.

Not so much dogs as giant fantasy wolves. Remember everything in DF is going to be far less domesticated than what we have now. Domesticated animals tend towards smaller sizes and dark colouring.

Giant rams are okay, but what we are looking for are mounts that work well with tunnel fighting. The natural attacks of rams are limited to short charges ending in a headbutt. The other animals have short charges that end with tusk goring, biting, clawing and whatnot.

Well yeah, I was talking about "domestic dogs" and not about some fantasy type dogs. Giant dogs or something like that could work yeah.

I've liked the idea of a close relation between dwarves and boars ever since Age of Wonders.  But I've also seen them riding giant moles and cave worms.

What?! Its a must have for strategy fans! I also have it. [AoW2 Shadow Magic] There are some decent mods for that game, some of them are adding new races+units into the game [+graphics for them also!], better AI etc.
This is the best TBS fantasy strategy still, [Heroes serie wasnt that good imo, only HoMM 3 - AB] since it is a bit like MoM. I guess only Stardock's upcoming MoM clone will be better.  8)
Hmmmm Im going to install the game again.  ;D 8)
