Keep in mind that historical death gods were not "LOL EVIL UNDEAD" deities, but often the protectors of those who pass over.  (For example, Anubis was the "God of Death", and his priests said the prayers during death rites, preserved the body for the afterlife, and Anubis himself was supposed to grant speech and sight to the dead and help protect them in the afterlife.)  Death gods would likely be the ones whose followers would be lighting the funeral mounds to ensure they don't come scratching back out of those shallow graves.

Kezar, "Kezar"

Kezar was a deity that occurs in the myths of The Creative Paint. Kezar was most often depicted as a skeletal female dwarf and was associated with misery, deformity and disease.

Granted, I haven't played for a while and these kinds of gods were much more scarce than I remembered. Most of the gods can be put in a good light like Anubis I'm certain ... but Kezar here? Pray she never gets a cult following!  :o

If you completely disassemble the corpse, such as turning the corpse into bone crafts, there wouldn't be anything left, structurally, for it to be reanimated. It would of course be macabre, but would be safe.
All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is encircled with bands of dolomite and adorned with hanging rings of tower-cap. The object menaces with spikes of microcline and sentient spikes of undead fire imp bone THAT WANT TO EAT YOU ALIVE.

Granted, you might have to get a little more... creative with making some deities more palatable than others.

If we continue our Egypt theme, there was the Egyptian God Bes, who was essentially an ugly and deformed dwarf little person.  In spite of being ugly and deformed (often hunchbacked, with a massive phallus, and naked), he was seen as a protector of the home from disaster, and also as a fertility deity.

Perhaps, Kezar is actually "protector of the downtrodden", goddess who gives solace to the lepers of society: the diseased and deformed who suffer at the lowest ends of a cruel and callous Communist society.  Her priesthood cares for those least fortunate in society, and preaches the importance of self-sacrifice and charity for those around you, and giving thanks for simply being healthy and alive.

In short, KEZAR DIED FOR YOUR SINS!

stuff

This is why religion scares me. Kezar just became a friggin' saint!

Anyway, I see your point... and dwarves -do- have a fixed racial profile. There isn't any real diversity among them so there's no real reason to think their religions will be diverse either. and necromancy is very un-dwarven.

Unless this will change in future releases when religion is thoroughly implemented then I'll buy that religion (or tradition or superstition) will put a dwarf in a coffin and that will please the dead enough to not rise again.

bull-frickin-SHIT.

The instant Toady One released a DF version with necromancy, there will be hordes of forum posts debating how best to use it to torture elves and kittens.

Heh...

Still, that goes back to one of those points about morality and ethics in this game.  Dwarves will not butcher sentients normally, but you could still collect mermaid bones by building an automatic mermaid-slaughtering house.  The dwarves built that machine, but they are somewhat like bees or ants - they build the device without knowing what, exactly, it is they are building, and as such, are fooled into not understanding that their actions are to create an elaborate system to bypass their own ethical opposition to the murder of innocents for profit.

Dwarves do not torture for fun.  Players torture for fun, and use dwarves to impliment said torture, but the Dwarves don't realize it.  This is because dwarves are really, really stupid.

Once the magic arc comes into play necromancy may be an option.  :D

What better way to bolster your forces than to slaughter goblins, raise them as undead slaves, and then slaughter even more goblins which then add to your ranks?

Unfortunately, magic is one of those things that severely divides the playerbase regarding how magic should be implimented, so I hope Toady puts that off for quite a while.

I actually prefer low magic settings myself. Magic confined pretty much to lengthy, elaborate, expensive rituals that can take months to complete. Sort of like building a golem and then animating it. Thats pretty much DF level magic. Behind the scenes stuff to explain the creation of bronze colossi.

Definitely not flinging fireballs out of magic wands.

Maybe some force could posses dwarfs to reconstruct corpses out of different corpses  and create abominations of half elf half goblin.

I tend to agree with that, but I also tend to like things such as the Gust game alchemy system or something like the alchemy system of games like Oblivion, where you can spend time just out randomly wandering the countryside, collecting random herbs that can be used in dubious psuedo-scientific/psuedo-magical alchemical processes, and where every use or every enhanced version of equipment is another trip to collect more raw materials.  Especially when making upper-level equipment, which requires repeatedly upgrading and combining lower-level equipment, so that any given expendable one-use item may require a couple dozen raw materials, or hundreds of items to make one suit of armor.

Basically, I like great big honkin' material chains.

But as much as I want to talk about it, this is going way off the rails.

I still just like plain using cremation, since I find it so much more dwarven to throw everything a dwarf owns in a giant funeral pyre like a viking warrior, and then light the fire with a magma flood.

No, they are just really, really sober. By not drinking enough beer (30 barrels a day), they loose their imagination, and cannot see your imaginative structure for what it really is.

Ehh, vampires are an exotic form of undead.

I'm just talking good old fashioned zombies. Zombies are always popular!  :D
