Tileset for improved text?
« on: June 28, 2010, 05:06:16 pm »

So I prefer to use the ASCII graphics, not only because it sparks my imagination more (dumb I know) but also so I can know what different things are referencing (as opposed to learning all new symbols and such).

Anyways, the one complaint I have about the default one is that the text hurts my eyes, is there a set that keeps all the symbols identical but changes the text itself?

This has probably been asked, but searching for tilesets comes up with graphical ones primarily which is not what I'm looking for.

Thanks,

Have you tried browsing through here: http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Tileset_repository ?

There are a number of non-graphical or minimally-graphical -- some go for more graphical walls and leave other stuff alone; a few like inquisitor saturn's large non-square try to graphicize a few symbols while still keeping them in the shape of the original -- tilesets in here you can find if you glance at the images.

I'm using the Cooz tileset (16x16), it's very similar to the original but the text is easier on the eyes. Be sure to check the link Star Weaver posted, that one is there along with other nice ones.

I made this tileset specifically to have as few distractions from text as possible. I haven't updated it for DF 2010 yet, but if you like the letters you could copy-paste them over another tileset pretty easily.

My favorite is Anniki 10x10. Small, square, clear and perfect. I used to use mayday, but I have a small monitor and besides, smaller tiles allow for a larger area of view.

I like it, very clear and smooth looking.
the only thing that bothers me is seeing male symbols in storage yards instead of bags, but its a necessary evil I know.

Ok.. I'm doing something wrong here, whenever I install a pack the dwarves themselves look like blue dwarf outlines.

Happens with them all, which leads me to believe I'm installing them wrong.  I copy/pasted the .png into the art file and changed the init file to include them and turned on graphics.. But somehow it isn't working.

Try it with graphics off and set the tileset to be used under the windowed setting.

Hrrm.. Now it just has the generic blue 'dwarf with beards' no matter what set (all other things change).  I must be doing something wrong here.
