Ah, the Supreme Court. You crazy bastards are the only ones who ever make good rulings in the federal government.

Not so much of a precedent since they did the same for DC already. But I suppose it is important because it's applying that logic to a state instead of a Federal district.

"Liberal" Supreme Court my ass. Looks like Anthony Kennedy was the swing vote.

EDIT: Please let this thread die an early death (possibly by gunshot wound). This has been done to death already.

Done to death? This happened today! What aspect of this is done to death?

I feel it's actually a good decision.

Then again, I don't think it is for "Crime Prevention", but instead for the concept of the "suicide pact" that the founding fathers inserted.

I believe in allowing the citizenry the tools to take down an unjust regime. If we can pull them down, then they tend to think a little more reasonably even in the face of rampant corruption.

Consider it the most base form of democracy. "I vote for you by -not- killing you."

Anything that gives the people more guns I'm in favor of.

The whole gun debate thing. There's several old threads (one of which hit around 100 pages if memory serves).

Yes, because that's *such* a sane basis for government. Perhaps we should reinstate the old tradition of electing the poorest man in the kingdom as leader for a year, then at the end of the year, we ritually kill him. Makes about as much sense.

Well, this isn't a gun debate. The Supreme Court overturned a handgun ban this time, and they'll do it again. Now, people will try to bring their own state's gun bans to the Supreme Court so that they will be struck down. This is a good thing. Freedom is important, including the freedom to own a weapon.

You do realize that dumbass malcontents with hunting rifles and handguns (or hell, assault rifles and anti-tank guns, for that matter) can't actually bring down an authoritarian government, don't you? And that even assuming by some bizarre happenstance the government did collapse, owning a gun wouldn't do shit to stop the radically worse warlordism that would replace it, right?

Even if you killed the first man to come to your door demanding you bow down, that would just justify a bloody reprisal against you, and the more you fight back, the more you just piss them off.

Really, you can't make statements like that and not expect a debate to start.

Fine, start debating if you think this is one. Debate is good.

It just seems like America's laws are really... inconsistent, somehow.

You aren't allowed to make any kind of rulings on a federal level, since that'd be "unconstitutional", but you are allowed to repeal a law passed in one state because unelected judges lean conservative.  It's just... weird.

The states can make whatever laws they want, but those laws can be brought to a federal level to be overturned. Usually the states pretty much run themselves.

Not true. You kill a dictator, you eliminate his government.

That isn't to say the next one WON'T be a dictatorship, but it doesn't assure the next one will be either.

I use the Dominican republic as proof. When the dictator died, THREE governments sprang up in a short period of time. This was only stopped when the USA put their own dictator into place.

The rest of that sentence was pretty accurate though, as the Dominican republic shows ;)
