what does this mean?

DF crashes on a single specific save, I'm starting a new one to test if it is only with the save.

The value bg is smaller then 0 or it's larger or equal to 16.

what bg actually does, i could only guess.

Essentialy it's a warning put into the code, that this specific value doesn't fit the data expected.

bg is frequently shorthand for background, and 16 is the number of colours DF knows about, so yeah, sounds graphics related.

an assert statement is a line of code that the programmer knows must be true, but tests anyhow (in case of wierdness). If the test fails, the program dies.

Sounds like bg means background.  And the graphic system is complaining that the value in bg is essentially asking it to draw the background with a color that's, well, non-existent.
