Yes, I'm sure they wouldn't dare risk Australia's global standing in the realm of competitive FPS gaming.

More seriously, it's going to play hell with the whole country. A lot of work involves the internet nowadays. I don't know if they noticed.

I mean, who the hell decides to take the greatest piece of technology humanity has and make it worse?

Whoever these children are they're protecting ('cause it sure as hell ain't me) I'm going to find them and try and incite some sort of revolution.

I have to tell them something

If your child goes and rapes somebody or kills somebody after watching pr0nz/playing a violent video game

You deserve to be locked up for not teaching your child the difference from fantasy and reality.

Wait...as I read it, it's a filtering system. How is that going to slow things down 70%?? It's more akin to China's Great Firewall (which is about as porous and easy to evade as the US-Mexican border).

This doesn't have anything about 70%, but I figured I'd include it. I can't really remember where I heard that it'd slow down the net by 70% though, you'll have to look that up yourself.

Oh, hey, here it is. It's actually on ED, that's kind of embarrassing. Apparently '"One particular technology" forces a significant performance impact on traffic (up to 40%). The majority have a "minimal" impact.'

Take that with a grain of salt, I guess. But you're right about it being easy to circumvent, so that's something.

In my opinion, slowing the internet by even 10% is far too much.

Errr....yeah. The bit about "slowing up to 87%" is misleading. Filtering can slow search functions down a moderate amount, but once a connection is established, you're fine unless it's incredibly pervasive packet-filtering. If we're just talking a list of blocked websites, the hit is marginal at best (US DOJ maintains a very large list of blocked sites, and the effect on Web-browsing speed from DOJ is negligible).

Now is, as I said, they decided to implement some kind of packet-filtering, wherein the servers tear apart and analyze each packet of data for naughty words and tits, then yeah you get a major speed hit. But that doesn't seem to be what's been proposed. Even the Chinese don't do that.

I'm not saying that I necessarily support Australian government filtering, or that it's a good idea, just that it's not the End of Teh Intertubes.

You know, I have yet to hear anyone speak positively of the Australian Government, how does it manage to exist if it seems so wholly unpopular?

Because guns are banned here :D

I'm saying that as if guns weren't banned here the regular people would have probably overthrown the government by now.

The only govt. party who'd try to block ALL porn would be Family First, but they're out on their collective asses soon, so I think unless we all go back to voting and this whole delicate balance/deadlock situation gets buggered right up, the collective weight of the Liberals and the Greens are going to kill off the internet filter. Rightly so too.

Now, if only the rest of the government situation could be sorted out. I really don't want Mr 'I wanted to be a priest but then I got into politics and am unable to focus on anything but the lowest common denominator' to wrestle victory out of this. ALP might have been careless arrogant dicks over the last 3 years but they're downright enlightened supermen compared to the display the LNP has put up over the last few months. 'Labor don't have the majority and thus have no mandate to govern, I AM PRIME MINISTER SOON', what the hell? Your damn party didn't get the majority either, try to not to undermine your own case when launching yet another attack on your opposition.

At least Gillard gives a bit of an effort to present something other than hysterical criticism of her political opponents. She just offers up pleasant sounding but ultimately meaningless words about progress and makes the occasional snark about Tony.

Because, let's be honest here, the only people on the forums complaining about it are cynical people in their late teens or early twenties. Hell, dwarf is, what, 11?

But yeah, the Greens won't let the filter through. So it's all good.
