Dubloon - Pirate RPG
« on: June 28, 2010, 07:30:42 am »

I did a search and didn't find anything but Puzzle Pirates mentioned, so I thought I'd post this.

Dubloon is a Freeware Old-School RPG where you play as a pirate.

I found it tonight and downloaded it, it's around 27mb for the version with HQ music and 11mb for the low quality music. It's pretty much like your old school Final Fantasy type RPG, ATB system (love it or hate it), but with some new features I found entertaining.

I was honestly surprised with the quality of the game, a lot of freeware RPGs released on the net tend to be pretty substandard but this was different. And the pirate theme was also an attraction, because it was something different. Unless you count Skies of Arcadia but meh.

It has a few interactive/gimmicky features, such as using the mouse to block certain boss special attacks, and using special 'battle items' that remind me of Wario Ware mini games, for example the 'Shake Bomb', where you have the shake a bomb as much as you can before the timer runs out. The more you shook it, the higher damage it will do.

When you sail to a new area, a minigame will play, sort of like a side scrolling shooter, where you maneuver your ship and shoot sea monsters and navy ships. At the end of the journery your points will be converted into dubloons, the game currency. Once you've been to a place once before you can skip the minigame.

I doubt it'll be as long as a Final Fantasy game, but it's definitely worth a try if you're into this sort of game. One of my favourite features of many RPGs, such as Earthbound is the ability to name your party's characters. I don't know why but I love it when I can name characters!

Anyway if you think you're into this sort of game, give it a try. The ATB isn't so bad in this either, character's speed changes how fast is charges and you can change battle speed in the options.

If you're into achievements you also earn some through the game (though they are named treasures), and if you have a GameJolt account they can be uploaded there.

I'd much rather play part of the Uncharted Waters series.

The super nintendo one is about the same type of thing as this, but to me just seems better.
I remember playing it as a kid, at the time it was too tough to figure out but, it was still a pretty good time.
Though, I may have to give this game a chance.
I've been surprised before.

Looks interesting, will give it a try.

EDIT: So I have to register a Jo-Games account that requires me to tell them my credit card number???  ??? Can you please upload the installer somewhere else so others can download without going through that process?

EDIT2: Nevermind. Can be downloaded here:

And oh, Uncharted Waters was awesome. Got me addicted when I was younger. There should be a remake of it!!!

Napalm is great if you enjoy hot and spicy foods. I personally enjoy some liquid nitrogen.
