How long do your worlds last?
« on: June 27, 2010, 08:28:46 pm »

Since I like to imagine my games as a piece of the world's history, I like to play worlds for a long time.  However, I usually give up on this for one reason or another, and have one or two games.  Currently, I think I'm on the fifth game in my world.

A couple of forts or however many adventurers it takes for before things get too messed up (something between 1 and a lot). Can't wait for worlds that try to stay alive and interesting little longer in adventure mode, instead of steadily dying.  :D

I generally generate a new world with each version even if they are compatible because I find it a good excuse to give up my current crappy fortress and try not to screw up the next one.

I usually play an adventure to get a feel for the world, then build a fort.

Though if forts could survive the end of a fort game, I'd probably play a single world until i changed versions.

I often hope i can one day return to the FPS-dead fort (when i get an i7 and all that). So i always gen a new world. Then after some time i redownload the game, mod some other stuff in and delete whatever was left from before.

My current world is the longest lasting one. Two fortresses that met horrible, bloody ends, and my current third fort which lives on so far.

Sadly, I wish I could continue this world, but it's losing features. No kobolds to start and one dorf civ started without a monarch, now a liason for a human nation and previous aforementioned dorf civ is dead too.

There's still the other dorf civ at least. Their monarch has no kids (maybe something that can be fixed), and he was a ripe young age of 100 by the end of worlgen. :P

Seeing as my fortresses never last more than an ingame year, and I do a lot of creature modding, I probably generate a new world every other time I start the game up.

Unless there are ridiculous amounts of aquifers, I tend to keep one world. Though I tend to get bored of my forts quickly and start new ones in new worlds. Hopefully I will return to some of them.

While the new versions (especially those that cause backwards computability issues) usually prevent me from doing this for long, I like the idea of continuing to use the same world for many, many games, and then one day exploring the world with an adventurer. Especially with megaprojects and design-intensive forts.
