Greetings,

I became aware of this very promising mod today (I downloaded versions 12 and 13 today + all soundpacks except ¤toikkus.zip¤ - announcements), but after some testing it really puzzles me. I can only hear this sound effect when I open DF (my current v. is 0 28 181 40d18). Otherwise, it remains silent. I actually dont know how often there should be sound effects, judging from the Youtube-video (mining sounds) there really werent any other sounds.

I made a "Soundsense" -folder inside DF folder and downloaded soundpacks to Packs-folder (folder-path looking like this with an example: DF\Soundsense\Packs\seasons), and Soundsense reads the gamelog. It mainly contains messages like "sound for X (for example "migrants arriving" or '\*\*Loading Fortress\*\*' ) doesnt contain any soundfiles and is not speech or end of loop, ignoring".

I'm afraid this problem may have an easy answer, but anykind of advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Messages about ignoring sounds are fine, it just means packs does not contain anything playable for that event and is just expected message (mainly usefull for pack-makers).

Sound should be played when something happens in game and game logs it into gamelog.txt, so it is quite possible to have rather silent gameplay experience in begining or when nothing really happens.

Later on, when fort is more busy and you get spammed with all kinds of messages, it should be more lively. Try queuing some tasks to manager for example as you should get ta-dah when it completes or clicky sound when it fails because some raw material is missing.

Thanks for the responses!

I downloaded most recent version of DF, and there sounds started working. I dont know what was wrong with the older version, I did every folders in a same way. Well, it doesnt matter anymore... The music while generating world, mining sounds, seasons music and the first death cry (in 10 mins, like usual)... Oh joy. I also downloaded Toikkus announcements, a nice add indeed (which I clearly underestimated at beginning).

EDIT (25th July);

This mod is great, absolutely great! Although I havent heard any sounds of rain, only the announcements that it has started to rain. There's this folder which contains "weather effects", and it should be working I guess. If other sounds work, I guess it's not the fault of JRE packs then? I'll try to re-download that pack again and see if it works. There rains a lot in my game, it would be a real nice add to atmosphere.

I hope I dont sound rude and impatient when I "pick these things up". Keep up the good work.

Would it be possible to trigger a sample when you start and end designating an area for digging? Maybe even every time you move the cursor, but only while your designating said area? :)

If it doesn't show up in the game log as an event, we can't do much about it.

posting here to recieve updates on this rater cool sounding tool. having difficulty getting it running at the moment - suspect my laptop lacks JRE...

EDIT: yea, latest JRE pack solved my issue. this is actually far better than i thought, and makes the game far more atmospheric than it already was (haunting almost)... looking forward to late fort fun a lot!

When I run 'soundSense.cmd' should something happend then?
A small window just appears then disappears.
Haven't had any sound in my game yet :/

Do I run 'soundSense.cmd' before or while I have DF runing?

same issue was what i originally had. my solution worked like this...

1: extract soundsense into its own folder within your df folder. it needs to be one directory deeper than the directory containing your gamelog.txt. [so your df might be c:/games/df... if so, your soundsense must be in c:/games/df/soundsense or suchlike.

2: ensure you have a new java version, availiable from sun microsystems...

3: i tend to run soundsense before running df, but you can start it second, its no big deal. it works best with df music set to off in your init file.

the box appearing and vanishing was the issue i had before updating java...

Maybe I'm blind, but I don't see a package with all the sound packs included. I would verily enjoy this.

There is none, you have to download them manually.

If a sound pack conflicts with another, what happens? Does it randomly choose between one of the options, or choose the first/last one it finds?

Is there enough demand for a repository of sound packs? I could make a small download-site thingy if people want it. It'd also make me get off my butt and actually work on my projects, too.

That'd be cool. It'd mean people wouldn't need to go all over the place (forums, DF File library, etc) to get sound files that people have made.

Its not working for me anyway.
My path is: F:\Spel\Dwarf Fortress MAPPEN\Dwarffortress 31.11\soundSense_13_71 (its in Swedish if you wonder :P)
I still get that flashing screen. And I have updated JAVA.
