It does smear, though, and quickly, so at least in df itself the water would look red.

I would like to propose that you add a sparse layer of lignite on the beard and light them on fire, after it is cast.

One person on the wiki page reports one lasting for six months, so they should last at least that long. If not, well, you can replenish it regularly.

Valuing life seems too close to an aesthetic rule for me, I think.

I was actually refering to how the corpse of the english i was about to butcher rose from the dead. But that works too.

And smoke is an obvious "cloud", sure. But you are forgetting the Power of Steam!

Seriously, rig an obsidian farm inside, and you can have the steam come out through the ears or something.
