Cast is coming along nicely. Can magma solidify a constructed stair tile?

One way to get the water up the arms would be to build a pumpstack elsewhere on the map and let water pressure bring it through a sealed shaft. This seems a lot simpler to me than twisted pump stacking in the arms.  On the other hand, you do lose bonus points if you do it the easy way.

i'm pretty sure that you cant actually do that - the water just flows back through the pump if any pressure is applied. dwarf pumps are basically Archimedean screws. look it up.

Doesn't it just require a pump-stack-supplied reservoir which is higher than the top of the mega statue, with a fully enclosed outlet which leads back down, under, and up through the arms?

This. Exactly. Though I think too many U-bends can screw it up somehow.

Just make sure it isn't forced through any diagonally adjacent squares.

xxoxx
xoxxx

(X's being walls, O's being water)

breaks pressure. So yeah, don't do that.

Mildly creative flooded-chamber pump stacks worked fine for water. I'm hoping that my use of olivine and iron for all components will let the same strategy work for magma. Still wondering about obsidian forming on stair tiles.

Pressure in DF doesn't quite conform to Real-World norms.

pumps have a WALL side, and a NONWALL side. the wall side works as a wall just fine when the pump is off.

well, you still have to get the water up there somehow, which requires a traditional pump stack.

Yeah, but one which is easier to set up due to being in a normal tower/mountain.

In fact, the entire concept of a naked, pissing, shitting dorf is juvenile...
You're right of course. Except I don't know if he's naked, I think maybe he's just wearing chaps?

Anyway maybe megadorf could have a briefcase or something, so the overall effect isn't so juvenile. Or glasses, to make him distinguished and smart. We need to get megadorf cleaned up so that the other megadorfs take him seriously.

Ah yes, because when I see a man wandering down the street in a suit with his bait & tackle dangling for all to see, I think "Gee, what a perfectly normal and well-adjusted human being."

Maybe Megadorf should get a khaki trenchcoat?

Okay go open DF, and look to see how many of your dwarves are actually wearing pants. unless you are relying on the textile industry for trading, I bet most wont have pants.

If I had a monkey, I would borrow my moms sewing machine and make my monkey a little monkey suit. Then if anyone said "Thats not a real monkey, it's just a monkey suit, I can see the zipper", I could say "I bet you fifty dollars it is a real monkey" and when they said "that seems like a reasonable bet, you are on", my monkey would take off the monkey suit and they would have to pay me fifty dollars.

The current problem is MAGMATIC NECK FLAB.  The increasing size of the head is shielding magma from being solidified by the water, the obsidian seals nicely against the side of the head and keeps a nice gooey patch of magma alive. I don't know how I will get at these patches, maybe I will figure out how to to a bucket brigade instead of boring a water channel through his forehead. Of course this still doesn't solve neck flab layers made of water. As a side note one of my levers for water flow bugged, telling dwarves to pull it results in an inactive job.

Update: Bad design on the mug had led to the water and magma occasionally forming blockages. A small catwalk allows access to fix these, in a recent cleaning attempt two legendary miners slipped on barely moving 1/7 water on the catwalk and fell to their deaths in the obsidian mold.

you're gonna have to time it. a little water, a little magma, over and over until you fill the whole thing with obsidian.

This thread has inspired me to adapt a poem.  Enjoy the Percy Shelley about the eventual fate of this fortress if things could actually fall apart after enough years.

"I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose mouth
And wrinkled beard, and smear of alcohol
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear:
'My name is Urist McDwarf, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away."
