Oh hell Red Orchestra is 2.50!  Get IT!  GET IT NAOW!!!

It's like, the most awesome world war 2 shooter in existence possibly because it's the only one that doesn't try to imitate Saving Private Ryan.

Actually, Diablo clone has almost become a genera itself, just like roguelikes. Diablo popularized their loot system where you started with generic items and, via a points system, randomly generated enhancements. But yes, it's a very good game.
Diablo is a rogue-like... So I suppose a Diablo-like is a rogue-like for people who never knew rogue-likes, otherwise they'd say a graphical rogue-like.

Ok, here's an article on The Void that goes into a lot of depth.. I had no idea it was related to Pathologic.

The part people are specifically referring to with Diablo clone is the loot system. Diablo popularized the loot system where loot is assigned a point value which is distributed to stat bonuses. Many roguelikes use a generic system where weapons might have one or two bonuses. Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup is a great example. A weapon can have a bonus to accuracy, damage, and a brand or it can be a randart and have special properties but cannot be further enchanted. Most weapons are a generic base with a very limited, predictable set of enchantments.

Compare that to Diablo where a weapon has a level and rarity, and then a lump of bonuses and stats based on those. You might find a sword with a bonus to swing speed, health regeneration, and critical strike chance. Moreover, that sword will probably have a randomly generated name like "Speedy Broadsword of Healing Wrath". Weapons have randomly generated names rather than "Broadsword{+speed, +hreg, +crit}" as well. That's the difference between a Diablo clone and a roguelike. A game can use a Diablo loot system without being a roguelike, just like a game can use a roguelike map and save (or lack thereof) system without using a Diablo loot system.

Whatcha talking about willis?

That drop system is from moria/angband (at least 7 years older than diablo), with rarity, points and prefixes/suffixes based on what you're getting. If anything you should be saying angband-like drop system. Course diablo is more popular, but like I said, saying that is for when you don't know rogue-likes.

Well for that matter, Rogue was based on table top games, many of which had random dungeon generators based on dice rolls. Rogue popularized it's iconic style of gameplay just like Diablo popularized it's distinctive loot style. If we wanted to be specific, we'd be calling the games tabletop-likes.

The point I was getting at, though, is that calling a game a Diablo clone is referring to a different characteristic than a rogue-like. Diablo clones have a Diablo (or Angband, or whatever the heck you want to call it) loot system. Rogue-likes have randomly generated levels and perma-death. They're two totally unrelated, and (as Blizzard proved) compatible, characteristics

They're not unrelated, they appeared on rogue-likes. Or table-top-likes!

A question about The Void: does anyone know if the unofficial easy-mode patch works with the Steam version?

The game's concept sounds great to me, but I really don't have either time or patience to play something that's described as "stupendously, unrelentingly difficult” by a mainstream reviewer.

A quick answer would be appreciated.

I wouldn't know, but if it doesn't change the main .exe or dlls, it's likely it will work.

Yeah, If I'd taken 10 minutes to search the Steam forums before posting here instead of afterwords, I'd have found this thread, shich says it works:

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1282228

Edit: Digging a bit further on The Void, I found this .torrent of concept art, music, interviews, poetry, and whatnot.  Legit.
End edit.

So that's another sale to Steam.  They're nickel and dimeing me to death here, but I can't pass up these deals!  Anybody else having that problem?

Yeah, I love the cheap good deals. Still biting my lip about the global agenda one. I only have one day to decide, I think.

I've bought so many cheap games already... Looks like I may finally get to finish the Gothic series.  About that though, anyone know if there's a mod or patch or something that uncensors the US version of Gothic 2?  I remember reading it was censored, and I haet censorship  HAET IT!.
