SupCom also has a 3D rendered minimap. You can even zoom it in like the normal one to keep a close watch on specific points.

Not quite. IIRC they call it 'dual view' or somesuch.  In reality, it is a second camera with the same abilities as the first.  I used dual monitor with the game (it supports it natively and it is the actual original purpouse for their dual view) and it was quite a nice aid to being commander.

Yeah, mostly you have a static screenshot of the map surface as if from orbit and that "light shining out of a window" cone thing to show you where your view is pointed.

A minimap for DF would be handy. Since the game window is so small most of the time you could have it in a seperate window.

The only problem is scale, what would it be? 4X4 to 1 square scale? if anything it would let you move around faster, not really an issue unless your fortress is HUGE.

A few thoughts:

  • The stuffed body of a pet should comfort the pet's former owner as a grave for the pet would (maybe a bit more?), and its loss or destruction should obviously upset the dwarf. Presumably the ex-owner of the pet should be the owner of the stuffed remains. (Aspgren discussed stuffed pets at http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=63023.msg1451531#msg1451531)
  • Similarly, the fortress-dweller who kills an especially fearsome creature should probably take special pleasure in seeing its stuffed or skeletal remains, and should perhaps be unhappy to see them destroyed, lost, or sold
  • The eyes, claws and so on of a stuffed animal are obvious places to set jewels, precious metals and so on
  • Dwarves in a Strange Mood could use the skeletons of two or more animals (or fish) of different species to put together a chimerical display skeleton as their artifact. Chimerical stuffed animals are possible too (rogue taxidermy! http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Taxidermy#Rogue_taxidermy)
  • Anthropomorphic taxidermy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taxidermy#Anthropomorphic_taxidermy is probably more of a goblin taste
  • Some dwarves could have a (very natural) fear or dislike of stuffed animals in general. Additionally, dwarves with a strong aversion to a particular type of creature might also feel a less-strong aversion to a stuffed specimen.
  • The high-quality taxidermy seen in the past 200 or so years of Real World history is probably a bit of an anachronism - too modern and high-tech - in comparison with some other parts of the dwarven tech-level. But yes, goblins, adamantium, bronze colossuses, rats'-nest lever systems ...

I'd imagine this would be personality based.
If only because every dwarf enjoying seeing Fluffy McCat cleaned and stuffed more than giving it a grave has the potential to be a little... creepy.

Well that went better than expected.  He went nuts and punched a rabbit to death, then the dogs and the whole dining hall ripped him to shreds.
