16x16 in a pocket region without caverns or any underground features will work with about 100 fps at embark.

While it didn't work, I've found that a 16x1 embark using nano for works pretty well, gives you plenty of variety.

16x1? not much room for megaprojects

scrap that, just build a dwarven firerailgun, and point in in direction of the nearest forest retreat

Heya calvin;

I did this 16x16 embark thing a couple times. The FPS is playable until you do pretty much anything that modifies the pathing grid in more than a few world tiles. By the time I had 12 dwarves and maybe 1 year worth of basic rooms dug out, I had bled out down to 33fps, I knew it wasn't going to remain playable for long. I have not tried this in 3108+ which gets globally better FPS for me than the 40x versions did, but even if it was 20% better it would be a curiosity at best... FYI, my specs 6gb of ram which DF doesn't need or use, a core i7 nehalem which DF doesn't know how to use, a 9800gt which DF doesn't need or really benefit from, all on Evga mobo with no raid array or anything of the sort.

Notably, exporting local images and compressing images seems gouts faster than before my pc upgrade but overall, it hasn't change DF speed very much. It seems like init tweaks matter more than hardware... If I ran DF on a Raid 0 array I would expect much faster seek times on loading the game but that probably doesn't speed up pathfinding at all since DF isn't having to use the page file or anything. Good luck !

16x16 embark, little grassland at the bottom left, rest pure mountain (i figured the lack of trees might help).

took a while longer to load, maybe close to 2 minutes, but there it is. FPS plummeted to 3 immediatly, but now its up to merry 50 FPS, pre-ordering some digging etc.

i'll see what happens when i tell my dwarves to work some.

FPS down to 30 while my horde of 7 dwarves attempt to path across 8 tiles worth of landscape to start digging and put things in a stockpile close to the only initial water source for farms.

i wont be playing this, but it's definitely possible. My specs aren't uber either: Core2Duo E6600 oc'ed to 3ghz, 4gb ram limited to 3 by 32bit OS, geforce 8800.

And for all those neverending "multicores wont help" complaints: YES THEY FUCKING WILL. Not because they can all be used, but because every damned individual core in these processors is better, even at much lower #ghz, than an old AMD or pentium4 single core.
Architecture has improved lots, making things so much more effective, its really hard to believe until you upgrade.

the lack of trees? what about the massive amount of extra z levels?

Interesting. Noble, DF2010 helps A LOT. I've experienced an average of a 325% increase in FPS, from ~20, to ~85, but I've seen 250 on a 2x3. On a duel core Intel® Atom™ N450 NETBOOK processor! A NETBOOK. Insanity.

I did my largest long-term 40x fortress right before 31x was released, on a 9x9 extremely mountainous embark (Check out Moonsyrups at DFMA) and stuck at about 21 FPS the whole time I played it, once the initial fortress was built up. This is during heavy workload--it does idle in the 30s. I would LOVE to be able to play that fort in the modern DF, as it ran for some 15 or 20 years and had a lot of really sweet, awesome, long-term mega-constructions finished. The FPS was just low enough to make it a large timesink to do any large-scale dumping. Also, my giant cave spiders never bred, which made me really sad. Apparently fertility must exist at worldgen for existing creatures to mate. :(

My current fort in 31.08 (check out Beandagger at DFMA) is just a 3x3 embark, current has 20 dwarves. 3 are children and 3 are soldiers. My pop is capped at 75 but for whatever reason I'm just not getting anymore immigrants--possibly because I have child cap turned on. In any case, I have tried hard to emphasize reducing traffic density by using highly-distributed workshops and stockpiles with numerous connections to adjecent rooms, wide hallways, vertical paths everywhere, and frequent culling of livestock. The underground is totally sealed off and I've drained the largest pond... This fort stays at 60.00 FPS no matter what I do, which is amaaaaaazing. I only give the dwarves one major type of work at a time, and they absolutely skullfuck any mass job in half a season.

Gonna go upload the fort again, as the current post is pretty outdated...

^ Really big necro here, 4+ years. The fix is discussed here:

Never tried it myself, but by using a Large Address Aware hack you can get DF using 3GB on 32bit systems and 4GB on 64bit systems. Perfect for getting those 16x16 embarks working.

Yes, but why did you necro a thread from four years ago?

Check the date on what I quoted. I put a caret ^ before my comment to indicate that I was referring to the quoted text as the necro.

Taking the opportunity I made this exactly.
Vanilla df 40.22
Large Address Awareness
Intel Core i3-2120, 3.30 GHz
8 Gb of DDR3
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bits

It was incapable of loading the site, got to 4 gigs and crashed.
