Perhaps I should clear out that folder more often.

Remember to defragment after doing that. Clears up a lot of extra other space.

You might want to turn save compression on.

Hmm... 11 installs of DF from 40D to .31.08, total size of all files... 1.18 GB.  Not huge, but significantly larger than I expected.

I don't know what version you're playing. In 31.x my newly generated [LARGE ISLAND] worlds tend to be around 60-80 megs with [COMPRESSED_SAVES:YES]. My own worldgen-settings give me somewhat smaller saves (around 50-70 megs maybe). Shaving off raw-folder saves less than 2 megs. Zipping saves nothing. I don't have any mature forts yet, but have no doubt that world with couple of forts and maybe some adventuring would be over 100 megs.

You seem to be forgetting about backups.

At 20MB per fortress, that would be around 350 saves. (6.84*1024/20). So that makes sense; it's about 87 years of in-fortress time, so if you have a lot of fortresses (or a few long-lasting ones) and have both seasonal saves and backups on ...

Still seems a bit excessive to me.

large world stopped at 150, also using genesis mod that probably adds a few bits here and there.

A freshly-generated (no embarks at all) large world in 31.06 or 31.08, with fairly standard settings, seems to take about 30 to 35 MB, with compressed saves.  Having an initial, simple (few animals in embark or native in the units list) Spring 1051 embark takes the folder up to a bit over 40 MB immediately, again that's after compression.  I don't have a mature fort in the current versions, but with AUTOSAVE:SEASONAL and AUTOBACKUP:YES (how I normally play), that's at least 160 MB per dwarf-year even at the start, and usually more as odds are I've made a deliberate backup before trying something at least a few times.  You could trivially get to the above number just playing a single fort for 30 or 40 dwarf-years, and if you've got a lot of abandons or experimental forts, even less continuous play.

All my old dwarves live on within my heart, even if their saves were deleted\lost\hard drive crashed\they died and got abandoned\etc. Remember your dwarves and fortresses!

i've not been playing much, but still have 2.1gb of dwarf fortress in around 20 versions. 6.86gb is nowhere near excessive, and with autosave and backups on it's probably sub-standard  ???

Comparing world files is interesting though.
I've taken a look at 3 freshly generated medium regions, 2 are normal 15-20mb size; the middle one has a whopping 40mb  :o
