I hadn't thought about that. It does seem sensible to ban an obvious hazard that has no real advantages if they keep it.

I'd much rather have a travel sweet anyway.

It's funny, though, I don't think SE Asian airlines serve peanuts at all.

Philippine Airlines apparently has cookies, though.

Cathay Pacific probably serves sandwiches, they're pretty upscale.

I think it's a bit silly when a better alternative could be to ask "is anyone in this row allergic?" when handing out peanuts.

That's why you tell them beforehand, which is something people already do, which I mentioned before, rather than while snacks are being handed out.

Those with peanut allergies need caution, not paranoid fear.

Making sure airlines don't serve peanuts when severely allergic people are on board doesn't count as "caution" to you?

I was referring to the overprotectiveness that leads to fearmongering at allergic children. I suggested making sure not to serve peanuts in the presence of the severly allergic.

As someone who has a good friend who is *severely* allergic to peanuts, this thread isn't a source of amusement. I've no problem with either a peanut ban or a conditional ban per flight if a passenger requests it (possibly with a requirement for a doctor's note, just to help prevent abuse).

Peanuts are a racket anyways...they're just trying to get you thirsty so you'll buy extra little 4oz cans of soda.

I miss flying overseas...they know how to treat you right. On Qantas I had unlimited booze. On Air China, I got THREE freakin' meals on a 3-hr flight from Hangzhou to Beijing. And we're not talking a pack of peanuts, this was like fresh-made yakisoba. I kept trying to figure out if they had some little guy with a wok stashed away in the plane somewhere.

D: Your job lets you fly often?

I've only ever flown economy class. :(

But no, never been served peanuts..

Almost every time I flew, and I used to fly quite a bit, they served peanuts, and when they didn't it was pretzels.

Malaysia Airlines does. But it's icky stuff. I'd rather have real food.

No, most of that was personal or academic-related travel. And it *was* economy class. Of course, both Qantas and Air China are known for being pretty spiffy in terms of in-flight service. Singapore Airlines is supposed to be pretty nice too.

US airlines would make economy passengers flap their arms to keep the plane aloft if they could. Last time I flew in the US, they charged for a pillow, they charged for headphones to listen to the in-flight radio/movies, they charged for anything beyond the complimentary peanut pack and one 4oz can of soda. Some are even starting to charge for THOSE. And if you're on a short puddle-jumper flight? Forget it. You'll be lucky if they even check to see if you're breathing. That's why I was shocked to even get fed on my Air China flight, much less fed three times. Of course, it's kinda hard to go to China and not have food thrust at you pretty much nonstop.

I'm sorry, but food served on airplanes is hardly ever 'real' food.

I only eat peanuts for the honey roast, if science can figure out how to honey roast other food products I'd have no problem with this.

I believe you can find honey-roasted locusts in many parts of the Middle East.

You should fly on Malaysia Airlines some day. Great meals.

Hi!

I am with the "needs more research" crowd. While it might be a good idea to have the buffer zone thingie, to implement that, you would need to know how much any agents actually spread from a source within a plane before getting sucked up by the ventilation and thereby neutralized by the filters in the ventilation system (remember, we have to assume a fully functional airplane. If the airline does not maintain their machines properly, they are to take responsibility for any undesired results, not the government, and it is not the purpose to protect them from their own stupidity).

I also have the impression that peanuts are used in many, many snacks, so implementing such a ban might be a bigger issue than just stopping the "raw" peanuts themselves. Again, research would be required to figure out how much of a restriction is really necessary.

I am also wondering about this because what do you do if the passenger next to you ate a bag of peanut-based crisps BEFORE entering the flight and didn't wash their clothes and shower, having dust here and there?

EDIT: Fixed missing "to know" in first paragraph. Man, I really need some sleep, I guess (^_^;;

I just want any changes to be implemented according to good scientific research and not the paranoia du jour. We have way too many uninformed, knee-jerk reactions in this country, and they always demand federal legislation. I appreciate people's right to worried, terrified, or to hold up X as a reason why we should do first, think later. I require a lot more than that though, as does most anyone else without an allergic child or best friend, and thank god the federal government does to. (For once.)

If this were an instance, again, of people keeling over on a daily basis on airplanes, my knees would be working along with everyone else's. It's just not that imminent of a threat though, unless you live in a world filled daily with imminent threats. (Which, I have to say, describes many allergenic people I know.) We have the time and opportunity to do the studies, so we should do them.
