Wilderness Survival
« on: June 22, 2010, 03:44:33 pm »

Ok im making a game it will be about surviving in the wilderness and i intend to make it semi-realistic

i will let the players decide the setting  and whatever get most votes wins

it is set about 400 years ago and i will be letting only 3 people at a time

now the rules!

When I decide a skill check is necessary, I'll roll a d100 and compare it to the skill value.
Skills will be displayed as follows:

  • 50% arbitrary skill
    01##10########50########90##100

This indicates a 50% mastery of the skill. The bar below shows how likely you are to roll well/poorly. If you roll below the % value (or double the % value if the task is easy, or half if it's very tough), you succeed.
If you roll below 1/5 of your skill value, that's a critical success. If you roll within the top 1/5 of your failure range, that's a critical failure.
A roll of 01 is always a success and a roll of 00 (100) is always a failure (though not necessarily critical).

So with the bar above, from 01-10 we'll succeed critically, from 11-50 we'll succeed, from 51-90 we'll fail, and from 91-100 we'll fail critically.
also if you get a 1 is a usually good overshoot and 100 a near death encounter or very negative effect (since this is not a RTD no regrowing limbs ;) )
EX:your cutting a tree down and you get a 1 your likely to fell most of the forest and tire yourself out and if you roll a 100 you might get crushed or cut your hand off

you will be able to do 3 actions a turn unpenalized and will get a +5% penalty per extra action

Stat checks:For stat checks i will be taking a base of 20% and all stats that apply to that action will add a 10% bonus

But... That would break the laws of sigging! We can't have everyone running around with the same quotes. IT MAKES THEM UNFUNNY FASTER!

Okay, here's how it goes.
You get Survival skill at 20. Higher skill means that you can succeed even with high rolls, and it goes up to 100.
You can either have 3 skills at level 50, or four skills, but with a -10 penalty (that is, at level 40).
You have 5 skill points. Suppose you put 3 skill points in Strength. Now, suppose you try to lift a heavy log - that uses Strength. You roll a 67. Each skill point subtracts 5 from your roll. So now your roll is 67 - 15 = 52. So if your Lifting skill or whatever was 58, that would mean that your strength points had saved you.
Location: Woods, tundra, grassland, riverbank, whatever.
Inventory: You get clothes and three extra items - I'd recommend something like a knife, maybe. You don't need stuff for your skills. If you get the Firemaking skill, you get flint and tinder for free, you don't need to bring it as an extra.

Thank you Cheddar thats exactly how i was trying to explain it except the skills will be more generalized IE survival would include firemaking, basic tracking cooking etc.

Survival covers pretty much everything at its most basic levels
If theres anything else that needs clarification please tell me
