Adventurer skills? In MY next version?
« on: June 21, 2010, 02:26:56 pm »

By the "little bit of adventurer skills thrown in" in his latest devlog, did Toady mean bona-fide, build-a-house-in-the-woods, digging-mines adventurer skills, or some fix to skillgain bugs? I'm assuming the answer is somewhere in between.

Yup, but probably only the rudiments of it.  And it won't necessarily be accessible in the very next version.

Something to look forward to, I suppose.  So much of the allure of DF is in the hoping and waiting.

Doing things like this is no walk in park. This cannot be done (completely) in few days.

And why doing this, when many players screams something about screwed military and other high-profile bugs? This make me sad. :(

I think this is why most developers don't pass around the alpha version of their product.  There's a lot of work left to be done, and every single element will have someone clamoring for it throughout development.

Did you read the devlog?  He's not abandoning the bug fixes.  He said "I expect to continue on fixing things, with a bit of adventurer skills stuff thrown in."  It's not surprising that he wants a little variety after working on bugs and technical code for the last 2.5 months.  Also, working on adventurer skills was a commitment he made to the community before the release.

Also because it's probably highly boring to be fixing bugs all the time - remember this is "home-made" development subject to the whims of a single developer. We're lucky it's been worked on for as long as it has!

I'd say it's perfect timing! Fixed all the annoying (IMNSHO) bugs now adding features. Perfect :)

Wow, why put up with tantrum spirals and pathfinding oddities when you can make a fine fort and your own masterwork equipment in adventure mode?

All those extra dwarves are usually up to nothing productive anyway.

I understand it - I am programmer too. I just note that he have... interesting... priorites. One would thought that after crashes and pathfinding, military bugs would be first to fix. Stuff like hospital, merge etc later.

I think the merge was a high priority to prevent the branches from getting further out of sync.  As for military bugs, he already fixed about 15 of those this month.  I'm not sure why you think hospital/healthcare bugs should be low priority -- a lot of them were pretty severe.

I think it's because people note one part of the sentence and ignore another part. It's how some logics work :). I was a bit overhyped about adventurer skills too.

Be honest: whose first adventurer under this forthcoming system will be a kobold?

Toady, how much of DF is inspired by Labyrinth? Is Armok actually David Bowie? Because that would simultaneously be disturbing and awesome.
