Thats what I heard, it was because that forum had degenerated so badly that there was no rescuing it.

As for trolls, we don't generally have them or they are very occasional, but theres this one guy around here who seems to be ramping it up with spinning lies.

Various nonsense.
It mostly produced nothing, although the VN map was truly amazing.

Basically, there was an incredibly long thread dedicated to gibberish and upping post count,

It was the source of the whole Penguin thing.

It was also, near the end, a source of porn, for some strange reason.

From what I could find, Various Nonsense used to be one of those wacky subforums that most forums have for everything that dosen't belong in any of the other forums. It apparently decayed to 4chan-like levels while Toady wasn't looking, and he deleted it.

The yuri thing was a problem, but from what I remember people were mostly posting pictures of people named Yuri.  Another big problem was when moving threads became an option, and Inaluct made the mobile battle fortress to be disruptive on other parts of the forum.

I remember it as a lot of yelling and inflating post counts through nonsense.

Oh, not the History of VN lesson again.  All I can add is that ultimately this is Toady's forum, and he takes his ownership of it quite seriously.  More than anything short of actual law-breaking, what Toady is most concerned about is people irritating each other.  What that actually means is entirely specious and anecdotal, but that's exactly what judgment is.  We could argue back and forth all day about what does and doesn't count as harmless fun, and how one man's honest entertainment is another's aggravation, but what happened to VN was Toady just decided it was causing too much strife in his forum, so he shut it down after giving plenty of chances for things to calm on their own.  And that's really all there is to it.

My impression from the VN fiasco and what Toady said about it was that Toady figured it wasn't a good idea to have a (sub)forum with no particular purpose to it whatsoever - that the board's lack of purpose/direction is what caused it to become such a mess, hence the introduction of the more particular "Finally..." forums.

That is true, but remember, whilst they are not magical moderating machines, they are efficient and reasonable. If you think someone is, I don't know, ruining a thread by spamming it up with images, then report them. If you think someone is breaking the forum rules or guidelines by their actions then report them. This really isn't like VN, because whilst that place devolved into a big mess because there were no guidelines in place to deal with people acting like idiots, there are here.

Report people. You have the ability, and then the actual owner of the site decides whether or not it's a bad thing and the issue is resolved. And if you aren't willing to do that, I don't see why I should listen to you because you do not decide what stays or goes here, the Adam brothers do, and I will bow to their judgment, not yours (which is not to say that I will not try my hardest to be polite). And I suspect that's true for almost everyone.

No matter how much we discuss things, they will stay the same unless Toady is involved.
