I agree, facepalming over people not getting your jokes is worthy of facepalming.
Does this call for the fabled double facepalm!?

... I am concerned this forum contains just a bit too much of it, and am beginning to feel that I cannot honestly present my opinions as everyone else is likely lying through their teeth at me.

Does anyone else feel this way?

Yes. Especially the life advice forum. 50-90% of the advice there is trolling. Once it reaches 90%, Toady/ThreeToe locks it.

General Discussion has a lot of spam, not trolling. When people disagree with something, some troll, others try to derail the thread with spam. I'm not really fond of friendly chatter on forums, because they like happen between the people who log on in the last 3 hours, and make the thread undiscussable for everyone else.

Creative Projects is surprisingly like the exact opposite of life advice, where people either say something nice or don't say anything at all.

So, yeah, forum's degenerated for quite a while now. It's still good above Other Projects section. I think Toady's arranged it in such a way that the lower the subforum is, the more useless it is.

I don't see all the stuff here as trolling, merely as friendly banter between lunatics cooped up in an asylum :)
Actually, we all escaped from the asylum, remember? It was right above your avatar for a couple of weeks.

I'd have you know I escaped from my own lunacy. You say you used to be locked away?

In the RTD, the GM can make bad things happen to a player who is trolling, but that place is all about fun.

the people not getting your jokes should be the ones palming their face.

It's funny, when you said that I imagined someone stealing their own face when they aren't looking.

Anyway. After all this discussion and everything else, I can safely say that if the member base doesn't suddenly do a massive shift and leave me all on my own with nobody I know, then I will always enjoy the conversations, jokes and discussions I have with other people here. You're all pretty cool guy. eh enjoyable to talk to depending on my mood and doesn't afraid of anything.

And I know someone will call me out on using a meme. I like you anyway.

And if you don't like it here and think the forum is headed for doom, or that we're all going to be banned, or that it's going downhill fast, or whatever then I guess you won't be sticking around. I wish you well wherever you head next. Enjoy yourself. It's important.

Hi!

I don't know. At least the general discussion section does have its interesting discussions at time. Of course, there are occasional derailings, there are the undying memes, and the rare troublemakers, but all in all, I don't think it is that bad. Of course, I don't visit the life advice forum, so I can't comment on that, and I only open threads whose title sound as if they were interesting for me, so my perception may be somewhat biased. Still, I think there is enough of good quality discussion and entertainment here so as not to despair.

This.

Fail whales need to stop complaining, imo. It's not like we've ever had trouble having serious discussions on this forum, whether people are joining in just to joke around or not.

Memes and derailings aren't bad things. Every forum has thread derails. It's how a conversation flows. We usually only start talking about serious political issues as a result of thread derails in the first place. This forum is far from dying or going downhill.

Ever notice a large part of General Discussion seems to be about talking about General Discussion in general? We seem to go a week, and then someone goes off and gets warned/banned, and then we talk about how people get warned and banned every so often, then a flammable debate comes around, and we'll all tell each other how flame threads tend to be flammable. After a period of peace, we'll reminisce on some noodle accident a handfull of us actually witnessed called VN, until someone posts about an event, in which we all watch as the event unfolds over the course of the next few days (or weeks, as the oil spill's case is).
