Weird. I picked 5 because it was in the middle. I was actually really surprised that 7 was winning. Seven just seemed like a bleh number.

I read a Cracked article recently that talked about how, when chosing numbers between 1 and 20, most people will pick 17. I guess it holds true for most sets of numbers. Weird social phenominon like that are everywhere. Like when a room filled with thousands of people will go quiet because they all decided to stop talking for a moment at once.

Okay, it's less why they make the decisions and more what decisions they make.
Everything else I need to know can be extrapolated later.

Besides, if you ask people, they usually won't know why they made that particular decision.

I choose 8 because 8 is less likely to be choosen.

I picked seven because I figured it's quite ingrained into culture, and so would get the most votes, and thus decided to add to that so as to help produce one number that won by an absurd percentage. I was right.

Yep; my guess is it goes like thus: 7 and 3 are the big ones to choose, as everyone knows. 7 being the more powerful of the two in people's minds, so those who just go with first impulse pick 7. Those who want to avoid being in the 7's clump next think of 3, as it is known as commonly picked, avoid that clump, and then go off on their merry ways to think through which ones haven't been chosen as often.
