I use the default square tileset, but with creature graphics. Not that I care about the graphics themselves, but it's nice to see at a glance the difference between a mountain goat and a goblin axe lord.

I use cooz curses 16x16

It's pretty much identical to the default, but everything has a shadowing that adds a sense of depth, not to mention gives things a border when they have the same background and foreground colors. And my dig designations have a border now so i can more easily read the exact dimensions of a planned room and make sure everything is symmetrical and odd-numbered.

Graphic set here. Used Maydays in 40d and have Phoebus for 2010. Did start out using the ascii when I first started but didnt like it. And besides the graphics do add a bit of nostalgia for me, brings me back to those nes days.

Yes. Clearly a bug that ought to be fixed in the future, but exploit it in the meantime.

I tried the ascii for a while (started during 40d), and had a really hard time reading anything, so I went to Mayday's.

Now that Ironhand has replaced the stone tiles that he was using, I prefer his set now, though. It is clean and crisp.

I use the vanilla graphics. My main problem with all the tile sets I've seen is that they try to fit to much detail into in each sprite. Everything ends up looking cluttered and confusing. After playing with it for a while, I actually find the standard appearance to be very appealing it. The simplicity of it is very nice, plus it lets me use my imagination.

Another vanilla user here. My biggest issue is that you end up with artifacts in the tilesets with bag symbols, chairs and whatnot strewn around through the text. Until this is resolved I'm sticking to vanilla.

There are default square tilesets that come with the game and can be easily configured.
I prefer square ASCII tiles, but I'd like them to be a bit smoother. Any link to standard yet smoothed sets?

The DF Wiki's tileset repository. Dig in.

Tyrving's 16x16 curses tileset is nearly identical to the original in style and looks much better, and that seems to be what you're looking for specifically.

I use 12x12 ascii, either curses that's been widened or umm... mkv I think.

I can understand why people might not want to use a graphical tileset but what I don't understand is how they can tolerate oblong characters.  Maps just look wrong when they don't use square characters.

Agreed. I got into tilesets largely out of want for a square tileset, and... frankly I wouldn't even call the prepackaged 16x16 curses a tileset at all. It's a horrendous mess.

I started using Dystopian Rhetoric graphics and the Guybrush character set, having a 16x16 screen. After a few months I started to see the appeal of neat little 9x9s on the DFMA, so I just made my own. But ultimately I could go without tilesets fine (and have a few times); the main reason I want character sets is just for my dwarves because I can hardly tell them apart from the background even if they're moving.

I too use Mayday with loyalty but I do like Phoebus instantly recognizable minerals and their usage. Great idea, but not enough to drag me over.

I agree that phoebus is nice but i like the controls built into mayday although it sems that when taking a save from a phoebus and running it in Mayday dfg will give you weird tiles. FUGLY weird stuff like ore being represnted as fish or trees.

Well I have to say I'm surprised by how few players play vanilla graphics.
