So I have been attacked by a steam titan...
« on: June 20, 2010, 12:57:50 am »

It is a great blob composed of steam.  It has three stubby tails and it moves about carelessly.

My small troupe of axedwarves has successfully chopped off all three tails.  However, the rest of the titan is now made of steam!  I can't damage it, but it also cannot damage me.  The fight is up on the surface, so I cannot easily create a cavein.  Is there any way to kill it?

Make them stop attacking it, then lead it underground.

Um, I forgot, do they train by killing stuff or just by swinging their weapons? If second... this would be a great way to train.

//just remembered a totally unrelated game — Majesty. There was a dragon in one mission. He was immortal, and I had enough healers, so in 15 minutes I've ended with 20 L30 heroes...

I got an artifact cave spider silk sock this morning. It's worth 5,720 dwarfbucks, and it doesn't menace with spikes of anything.

Considering the general state of DF, I think Einstein and Newton are already rotating fast enough that you could hook them up to pumps and use them to kill Elves.

I believe it's either swinging their weapons or doing damage. Almost certain it's not killing an enemy.

In adventurer mode you do have to actualy hit and hurt them to get weapon experience. Hence crappy wooden weapons on some zombie creature wont work.

I dont think this goes for wresteling though. Perhaps they will also train some dodging.

From my experience, it's enough to swing your weapon at a non-prone creature - if it's not standing up (usually due to it being unconscious), you don't get any experience from it.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

So no sleeping dragon kills by a bearded Dwarven baby?

no, baby can kill the sleeping dragon, and receive credit for it, but won't gain experience in fighting from the kill unless the dragon is standing and conscious, at which point baby dies.

I had this exact same problem. I built a Space Elevator to get above it's 'OMG Run!!!' radius and then built an Orbital Bombardment Platform to deliver a payload (popularly known as Armok's Hammer) to it to take it out. In order to (sort of) hold it in place, get some war animals to engage it and then you might be able to successfully deactivate your military and cause then to disengage (mine did).

I lost several war animals when the payload hit but it did the job. I've since improved the OBP such that the front gate is now covered by lever activated payloads from the control room up there and there's also a winged escape shuttle with chairs, beds and 2 years of food and drink. A lever in the shuttle will close the airlock and blow the connection to the station if an emergency evacuation is called for.
