PlungedPlanks - Aquifers abound.
« on: June 20, 2010, 12:48:41 am »

I decided to start a fortress on an island in the north, far away from land, with the starting civilization that only has one stronghold to it's name. The island itself is only 1 region big, and full of aquifers.

With such a setup, it's destined for failure. So like any sane person, I attribute more to the personalities of these dwarves, set them on their way of trying to survive and hopefully break into the underground. So lets look into what these dwarves attempt and revel in the eventual misery they will succumb to, the misery of the almighty Aquifer.

Using version 0.31.08 with my own tileset.

Onul Eddud "The Mirror of Obeying" wasn't a glorious civilization, but one of proud and adventure seeking dwarves. With only one mountain stronghold to their name, they wanted, or rather needed to send out many expeditions across the lands to grow their might.

Almoshcatten was a fine settlement, with plenty room to expand in the small mountain range it inhabits. For that reason, the royals decided to send out dwarves far across the world for the sake of fortune, or legend.

Up in the northern seas lay a lone island, peaceful yet cold. There is no apparent value on the isle itself, but that is in the past. The planning committee decided to set out, making a stronghold on the island not for the sake of physical treasure, but the sake of stories and legends. If successful, it would eventually lead to monetary gain in the far future, and dwarves have all the time in the world to wait.

This is the tale of PlungedPlanks, founded by The Lantern of Merging on island of The Notched Plains

-----

Once they have landed after months at sea, the expedition went straight for the center of the island and started to go to work, miners digging into the soft soil for a temporary home.

The group consisted of:

Dusty, an avid and professional miner, she prefers to be underground working at expanding settlement.
Edward, a military leader, teacher, who helps out with the initial mining to keep his strength up during the downtime. He is rather unfit for his position due to being easily discouraged and cracking easily under pressure.
Bunjon, the traditional Woodcutter and carpenter. Prefers the boring life of chopping and shaping wood.
Stoney, an average Mason and Stonecrafter. Seems to be calmed by her work, as long as it isn't bound by tradition or changing routines.
Crestorn, a worrying farmer. He has concerns about surviving out in the wild, away from the stable farms of Almoshcatten.
Olaf, the apprentice noble. He is the expedition leader, broker, bookkeeper, and appraiser. This is reflected in his appreciation for art and natural beauty, and his admiration of tradition. Couldn't get more typical of a noble class than him.
Doc, the shaky doctor. His nervousness may be at his knowledge he lacks skill in his field, and probbaly eats more than he should to calm his nerves, but his appreciation for organization should at least prevent medical mix-ups.

After a month, the expedition has finally completed it's initial digging of a temporary underground structure, as they start digging down into the earth.

But tragedy has struck! Upon digging down, Dusty found that deep in the soil was in fact an Aquifer! This could delay construction by months trying to find a way around it, or digging through it!

Normally it could be bypassed by pure brute force, with dwarves powering pumps to pump the water away while the soil is walled off, preventing it from flooding the hole, but without any stone above the aquifer, the expedition may have to end short, or live the filthy lives of a surface/soil dwarf, which isn't a very legendary end at all.

Olaf would have nothing of it, and tried to think of a way through the earth.

After months of planning, Olaf finally figured out a way to get through into raw stone. A brilliant idea only he could have though of, of course. Instead of gradually walling up the edges of a perpetually filling hole, they could wall up the entire hole at once! By creating a reverse pyramid out of the soil, they could drop the soil into a large hole, instantly plugging up the aquifer!

Malachite 1st
Mid-Summer

It took months to pull off the project, which Olaf proudly codenamed "Olaf's Hammer" and it was set to 'strike the earth' anyday now. However that is on hold now, as the expidition got an unexpected gain in the number of people living there. The kingdom decided to send more dwarves to help with the construction of the settlement. Although being disconnected from the mainland, they did not know of the problem facing the current crew, and inadvertantly sent enough to almost double the amount of dwarves assigned here.

Chastity, a legendary gemcutter. It was obvious with her demeanor that she was sent here under the guise of cutting all the rare jewels dug up here, after a confrontation with a nobel in the kingdom, even though her work was always excellent. Not only a skilled craftsdwarf, she is more skilled in fighting than even Edward.
Regilia, an excellent glassmaker. She is a very adamant glassmaker, intent on doing things on her own. While this causes her injuries and may make her seem clumsy, she also takes care of those wounds herself as well.
Legalas, a daring fisherdwarf. He is a suave dwarf, calm and relaxed while seeking -and facing- risks. Dreaming of being a legendary warrior, or fisherdwarf, he has great hopes for this expidition.
Risen, Cook. She may seem boring, but is very possesive of her kitchen, and can cook up food that could be served to royals.
Soaparella, a cowardly soapmaker. She knows how to make soap and stay out of the way. She avoids confrontation both by not being near it, and by flattering anyone she seems to have offended. Strives to do well what she knows, which is making soap.

----

Chastity immediately got off on what she considered a great start, with intimidating Dusty, along with the rest of the initial crew, to give her a big room, as her skill was far higher than any of theirs. That and she could greatly injure any of them if they refused.

Olaf went along with such demands, as once he was through the disgusting water riddled soil, he would have all the gems he wanted, and she would cut them beautifully.

-----

A Bad Plan

Olaf was gleaming with pride as his project's first major step was coming to an end. Everything was all set, and all that was needed was for Dusty to "pull" the switch.

No one could've guessed what would have happened next, as the earth was taken away, lowing the plug of dirt into the aquifier. The water that had already filled the prepared hole shot up along the edges of the hole, shooting into the air as a mist, and along the edge as a gripping wave. Dusty could not get away fast enough and was sucked into the flying rock and water.

After the commotion had settled, it was revealed that Dusty was barely near the now steep edge, leading to the now almost inaccessable pit that was made by the shifting earth. Thankfully after some rest and a look from Doc, she got up, and immediately started working on expanding the current homestead for the new migrants, although in severe pain, the wounds she received were thankfully light.

Olaf was worried about Dusty of course, but that was a fleeting moment before he saw something more concerning. In the mass of land that was sent down into the earth, was a crach leading straight to the aquifer, along with leaving no dirt left to fill it in!

I'm probably going to need some ideas on how to get past the aquifer, before I get too settled on the topsoil and have some kind of sissy Dirt Fortress.

Plus some knowledge on infections wouldn't hurt. Dusty got one after going to work digging after an examination. Doctor has yet to bother setting the bone or something. (got 2 splints in the hospital that was built after the accident)

Also if I'm being too verbose, or not enough images, tell me. Currently there hasn't been much excitement in the half year that has progressed. Hopefully it'll lead to some madness spiral and someone tries to drown the world.

Autumn

The farming room is now complete and irrigated from the pond above, taking some time after the accident with "Olaf's Hammer", Dusty is still working just as fast, although the pain has subsided, the hand is still broken and started to get infected.

Olaf is still racking his brain to think of a solution, since his previous grand scheme had failed, with almost killing their most prized miner.

----

Food Shortage!

The fort was running low on food, the farm was just built, but it will take time to get any crops out of it, and the 7 plump helmets left have to go towards making something to drink so everyone doesn't die of thirst.

The fortress has lost A Horse and A Horse Foal.

As Crestorn finishes butchering the animals brought on the expedition, he hears a noise. A pack of wild Rhesus Macaque have smelt the blood and plan on taking off with the meat. He cries in panic, as they repeatedly storm his butchery and run away, as if taunting him.

Edward hears these cries and throws down his pick and gets his axe, comes running out of the fortress and makes short work of three of them, the rest fleeing, one with a piece of meat. Edward proudly boasts his victory, although he knows it wasn't a hard task in the first place.

With the food shortage displaced, the fortress was at peace... until Olaf had another bright plan.

-----

Olaf's Hammer Round 2

Olaf calculated that the plan wasn't an entire failure, there was still enough rock grouped together that was not part of the aquifer to allow them to dig down, and if needed, to plug the earth once more! There was still hope!

Commanding Edward and Dusty to get to work, the miners quickly cleared out the new small area that was decreed to be "Olaf's Hammer MK2". Dusty working as diligently as ever even with a broken hand that didn't look too well at all.

However this is put on hold, as not only do 4 more craftdwarves migrate in, but an even larger pack of Rhesus Macaque come for the remains of their brothers. The migrants cry out, along with Crestorn as he continually butchers whats left of the previous assault, yet no Edward in sight!

----

Reeses

It is a week before Edward is woken out of his slumber and informed of the harassment by these foul creatures. Olaf if furious with him, as the miners cannot proceed with his project until these pests are taken care of!

Edward gets to work, but these guys outclass him in both speed and numbers! He catches the slower ones, but there are still too many luring him throughout the site, while the rest continually harass the craftsdwarves working by the depot.

Thankfully the Autumn caravan arrives in the nick of time, and the guards make short work of these thieving pests. Olaf greets them with great joy, purposely ignoring any of Edward's contribution towards the hunt.

After a quick trade, the settlement is on more stable ground, mostly thanks to the elimination and butchering of the Rhesus Macaque. Annoyed at the lack of anything good on the caravan, Olaf orders Edward to "pull" the switch on the second attempt at striking through the aquifer, as punishment for failing to defend against the annoyance by himself.

However the same thing as before happens and Edward is sucked into the massive dropping shelf of soil! Due to his apparent sturdy nature, along with the smaller scale, he was only dipped in water and was able to safely climb out of the detestable pit

I hope it isn't too boring. Other than Rhesus and job accidents, not too much going on.

Also, it's early-winter and it's a COLD climate, yet the water isn't freezing. Does it freeze only in Mid-Late winter?

I think the text/picture ratio is just right. Could you explain what your plan with the aquifers was better? I don't really have any experience with them.

I think you are using one of the most irritating to read fonts known to dwarfkind.

Wait to see if it freezes, and if that doesn't work, pumps can pump water extremely fast. You can create a dry spot with pumps in which you can build walls to hold back the water.

Btw, shouldn't this belongs to the community game section?

One of the toads decided to go for a swim in the moat - presumably because he could path through the moat to my dwarves. He is not charging in, just loitering in the moat.

The toad is having a nice relaxing swim.
The goblin mounted on his back, however, is drowning.

Or at least the fortress section.

Yeah, that font is hard to read, but makes for wonderful pictures. I cant wait until text is separated out :(

Heya, and welcome. First off, I wanted to say you balanced text and images very well, and so I actually enjoyed reading this story of your fortress. I'm still not sure what went wrong with your Aquifer, this tileset is harder to make sense of than some others. I'm a PTTGV5 guy myself :[

Poor Olaf, send him to wander the underworld and think of new ideas.

Strange, I know. I've always just used the ASCII that DF comes with, but I think the messiness is what appeals to me in this. Of course liking the way pictures of tileset look and actually liking them when you play can be different I suppose.

Yeah, loving the tileset.

I find that the less descript and the more representative a tileset, the more my mind paints the picture. This does that extremely well. Any chance you could post the tileset up for grabs? I'm sure there'd be a number of people interested :)
