Still the 9th of Obsidian, 1054

The first project at hand is to actually make some booze so we don't have to drink that disgusting cavern water.  The part of the cavern we get this water from is suicidally open to anything that could come from under or above the water, which I'll have to deal with soon.  As such, I told some random dwarves to get to the still and learn how to make booze.  It may take a while, but I'm sure we'll eventually have something that's drinkable.  I also told the stonecrafter to stop making those ridiculous baubles.  I don't see why anyone buys them.  I certainly wouldn't.


10th of Obsidian

Some child (why is a child in a place like this?) is throwing a tantrum and broke a door.  This is further proof that I need to fix this place, and quickly.


13th of Obsidian

A giant bat flew in through that part of the cavern that I complained about earlier, killing two dwarves and injuring several others, including the ill-equipped military.  I suddenly noticed that two thirds of the military was already in the hospital and useless.  Ugh.


17th of Obsidian

A wrestler just went insane from being so miserable.  I have the feeling that I'll see this happen more.  Also, I just discovered some farm plots down in the caverns.  I have no idea why they're there.


18th of Obsidian

A kobold thief just killed a baby.  Why is there even a baby here?  I'll need to tie up some animals at the entrances (it seems there's more than one) to scare off future thieves.  May the gods help us if something comes here to TRY to kill us.
...and now a gem setter just gave birth.  Maybe that's why.

That gaudy tower with the coffins seems to be getting full now.  I'm ordering some miners to dig a hole somewhere so we can put some new coffins there.  There already seem to be plenty just sitting around in the stockpile, which is good.
Speaking of which, I changed my mind.  I'm going to completely close the doors of this place until it can actually defend itself.  However, it seems that the previous morons-in-charge didn't think to import any flux stones, and there's none in the ground here that I've seen, so we can't make steel weapons and armor.

A stray kitten just adopted some idiot engineer.  What the hell are the butchers doing?!  I told them to kill those creatures when I GOT here.  That's it, they're not allowed to goof off anymore.

A dwarf who was in the process of making a bed went berserk, killing a bone carver before the pitifully useless militia (and some dogs) got to him.


24th of Obsidian

It seems that not much progress has been made on the booze yet.  Regardless, I told the cooks to get to work at creating meals, as well.

There was a goblin ambush.  Good thing I locked those doors!  ...I hope all the entrances are closed.
Also, an engraver just went insane.  I think I'm already becoming jaded.

1st of Granite, 1055

Spring has arrived, and goblins are outside our doors.  Fortunately, they're not INSIDE.  I almost feel sorry for any new "residents" or traders that decide to come by now, though.
...and another engraver went insane.  This could become a problem.


2nd of Granite

Why are those cats STILL not dead?  I'm ordering the construction of another butcher's workshop, since our only one seems to still be in use for chopping up the corpse of that giant bat.


3rd of Granite

The goblin bowmen killed a cat that was on the floodgate tower, for some reason.  That makes them more useful than the actual residents, so far.


4th of Granite

The mayor just went berserk because his mandate wasn't filled.  I didn't even know he HAD a mandate to be filled.


5th of Granite

The militia (and some dogs, of course) finally put the mayor down.  Now I notice that we have another mayor, so maybe that one was an imposter?  If so, good riddance.

A thresher just went insane.  Sigh.


7th of Granite

A cat just suddenly died from infection.  Not that I like cats at all, but I'm starting to wonder if anything will be left by the end of the year.


9th of Granite

A dyer just went berserk.  Surprise, surprise.  The militia put the dyer down, this time without the help of any dogs.


17th of Granite

I don't actually know when this happened, but some idiot furnace operator decided to go walking on the wall and get shot by the goblins.  Sigh.


20th of Granite

I suddenly notice our total lack of bins.  Wood shortage be damned, we need bins.  And maybe more barrels.
Just as I notice that, some metalcrafter starts being all secretive.


22nd of Granite

Some engineer just bled to death in the hospital.  The metalcrafter is still gathering things.  Also, I should note that although we DO have some booze now, it's not nearly enough.


23rd of Granite

Some child just died to infection.  I repeat, why are children even here?!


24th of Granite

Now some engraver died to infection.  I really don't think I want to know what happened here before I got here.  Also, whoever was in charge previously did a poorer job of sealing up the underground than I first thought.  I'm ordering this to be corrected.


25th of Granite

Now a diagnoser died to infection.  I think that dwarf was in the militia.  Oh well.  ...and now a baby also dies to infection.  Why is this all suddenly happening?  And a wrestler!  That's four dead so far from some infection that I don't know the source of.

It seems that the moody dwarf wants shells, and we don't have any.  Well, from what I've heard about moody dwarves, he's as good as gone.
An engraver died to infection.  That's six deaths.

A bowyer, number seven.  I hope the whole place isn't affected by whatever this is.


1st of Slate

A wrestler is number eight.  This is starting to become worrisome.


13th of Slate

It seems that the epidemic of death is at its end.  Strangely, the hospital no longer reeks of death, despite much death happening there.


15th of Slate

Some migrants have arrived...  while the goblins are still here.  Sucks to be them.


17th of Slate

A crazy engraver finally died of thirst.  I suppose that's not overly noteworthy, because that dwarf was going to die anyway.  The goblins continue to slaughter the hapless migrants.


19th of Slate

Another engraver was stricken by melancholy today.  Hopefully there will be at least a FEW sane dwarves by the end of this.

A child just died of thirst.  I'm pretty sure this one previously went insane, too...  I hope.

How did that idiot planter manage to get himself walled out in the caverns?  I guess I'll have to let him back in...

A thresher just died from thirst.  That dwarf WAS already insane...  right?


11th of Felsite

That metalcrafter who suddenly became secretive just went insane.  From what I'm told, this is quite normal when they don't get what they want.  Also, we have plenty of meals now, so I told the cook to stop cooking.  We still have very little booze, however...


12th of Felsite

The trader who was working on making bins suddenly went insane.  She was the last carpenter, too.  I guess I'll have to reassign duties, now that there are fewer dwarves who are capable of work.


15th of Felsite

A clothier died from thirst today.  The other dwarves tell me that he was often called "Qhan", though I don't know why.


17th of Felsite

An elven caravan has arrived.  The goblins are still here.  Well, sucks to be the elven traders -- more than it already sucks to be an elf, anyway.


19th of Felsite

Further investigation reveals that we DO have some weapons and armor, but it's all rather patheric.  The militia, which I have temporarily disbanded, wasn't even told to use THAT, though.


22nd of Felsite

It seems that the goblins left...  but the elves are still here?  I'm still not letting them in.

It seems that those elves found some more goblin ambushers the hard way.  Ha ha, sucks to be them.

A furnace operator just went insane.  At least this is becoming less frequent.

I'll work on this more later.  I didn't expect that it'd take quite this long just to get to summer.

1st of Hematite, 1055

Some of the residents have been grumbling at me that I have to "leave my mark", and it somehow involves those "towers" I mentioned before.  They're supposed to end up resembling a hand with an extended middle finger.  I showed them mine instead.  I don't have time for such nonsense.
Now that the absolute basics seem to have been taken care of, I need to oversee the creation of actual weapons and armor for a military -- assuming there are enough dwarves left to serve that purpose.  There are several who still seem like they might be at the breaking point, and while I don't care for any of them, this place will be useless without live dwarves.  But before that, I think I'll have the cavern wall improved a bit.

An engraver died of thirst.  They were insane before that, right?
And now a child suddenly went insane.  I still say that this is definitely no place for children.

A bone carver just went berserk.  I yelled at some random people to take him out, since it's pretty obvious that he was a lost cause.  They did so without any significant injuries to themselves.  Speaking of which, it's good that I didn't try to build another "tower" for the coffins, because there are so many that need filled.  The locals seem to keep marking coffins for those dead idiot migrants, though.

A trader just died of thirst.  Again, I'll assume that this dwarf previously went insane, because I don't care to look back at my log.

A metalcrafter also just died of thirst.  He died in the meeting area like many of the others, so I'll just assume that he was also insane.

Some farmer gave birth to a girl.  Why are they having kids here?!

Some clothier has started acting odd.  Must be another mood.  She took over a clothier's shop and has started gather...  things.

The clothier took some pig tail cloth, some rough alexandrites, and a tower-cap log.  At least this one shouldn't be going insane.

That clothier created a pig tail fiber robe.  It has an image of a human and giant eagles on it.  It's not exactly the most impressive thing.

A furnace operator died just outside the meeting hall, of thirst it seems.  Pretty sure this is another insane one.
I just noticed another place open to the caverns that I need to seal up.  The previous overseers were pretty careless, it seems.


2nd of Galena

A child just died in the meeting area...  of thirst, surprise surprise.  At least there shouldn't be many insane ones left now.  Or was that actually the last one?


14th of Galena

A human trade caravan arrived.  I SUPPOSE I should let them in, but I don't know if there are goblins waiting in ambush.  Maybe I'll just ignore them, since there's nothing we could do right now if there WERE to be goblins.


15th of Galena

There are reports of fighting to the northeast, where the humans were.  One dwarf swore that he could see goblins there.  It looks like I made the right decision after all.
Also, my improvement of the underground wall is complete.  Once the scaffolding is removed, I will return to the plan of actually outfitting a proper military.


19th of Galena

Some other dwarves report hearing particularly odd noises coming from the other side of the underground wall.  I don't know what it is, but it's probably a good thing that the wall is done, just in time!  ...that is, unless it can't fly, then my improvements to the wall don't matter much.


22nd of Galena

Oh no...  a yeti broke down a door above ground.  It could let the goblins in!  This could be very, very bad...  hopefully we can take it down and rebuild the door before something bad happens.  I'm sending out our best fighters (which isn't saying much) and equipping them with what little I can and hoping for the best.  Maybe if we're lucky, it won't break the OTHER door...

The yeti remains at our door.  It isn't doing anything, but... it worries me.

13th of Limestone, 1055

I finally convinced some idiot to grab a crossbow and some bolts and chase the yeti away via shooting from the walls.  The overseer who built the walls didn't think to build a way to actually get on the west wall, so I had to build it myself.


19th of Limestone

My improvements to the cavern wall are complete, and the scaffolding has been taken down, so now it's time to start making these idiots make weapons and armor for themselves.


25th of Limestone

Some idiot put sand in all of these bags.  No wonder the millers didn't do much despite all those bags sitting around.  I'm having something done with all that sand, then.
There is no flux stone here, so steel isn't an option.  However, granite sometimes holds the ore of tin, which can be made into bronze, so I should have miners search for it.


15th of Sandstone

We have struck a vein of the ore of tin, which will allow us to make bronze.  We will surely need to search for more, however.


8th of Timber

Preparations for making equipment continue.  A gem setter just made a show of withdrawing from society, probably to go brood in some workshop somewhere.


9th of Timber

That gem setter started working on something in the workshop...  with a single rough lapis lazuli.  Whatever she's making surely won't be very impressive.


14th of Timber

As I expected, it wasn't very impressive.  Just an earring...  a very boring earring.

The dwarven caravan has arrived, but...  well, I suppose I can let them in.  They're close enough to the gate.  What could go wrong?
...goblins, that's what!  Fortunately, I hadn't opened the gate yet.  Well, sucks to be those other dwarves.

The goblins died and fled, and the traders seem to have survived, so I guess I can let them in...  maybe.

1st of Moonstone, 1055

Winter has come, and the dwarven traders are still waiting outside.  Some mechanics are finally getting around to hooking up the gate to a properly-labeled lever.  I wonder if giving these idiots weapons and armor is even a good thing...
In lighter news, I just learned that the cooks created a rather large meal from something they killed before I got here (but only got around to preparing now).  It looks delicious, I suppose.

I was about to open the gate, now that I finally CAN, but it seem that the merchants are gone.  The gate remains closed!

There are reports of noises east of the underground wall, but I doubt whatever it is can get past the wall!

Everything seems to be running surprisingly smoothly for this sorry lot, but...  there's no time.  It's not done.  I don't want to stay here.  I'll jump off the wall.  Freezing to death or getting eaten by bears is better than staying here.  Did they even want me to actually help this place?  Maybe they wanted me to doom this place even worse, not fix it.  If I go back, they'll just send me back here.  I'll escape before someone else rises to power here and I'm forced to stay.  That would surely happen if I stay.  So I won't.

So...  yeah.  It looks like I played the part of the sane man who tries to fix things before they spiral out of control again.  There's lots more food now, and there is also booze (though more needs to be made), and the surviving dwarves are mostly happy.  I was in the process of making weapons and armor, but I ran out of time.  Also, I'm not entirely familiar with the new military system yet.  The set of armor described here is in the process of being made (for five dwarves), but I'm not quite sure how to make dwarves actually equip all of it without being stupid.  Good luck with that, if you try it.  I also had trouble getting a dwarf to use a crossbow -- they kept complaining about an equipment mismatch when trying to get their bolts.

Oh, and...  you probably shouldn't open the gate.
