OIL
« on: June 19, 2010, 09:21:24 pm »

im not sure if this has been suggested before, but how about underground oil deposits? they could use by dwarfs as some sort of fuel source that can be pumped to surface and wreak havoc on the environment and invaders by igniting it or for lubricating mechanism and making plastics, hmm perhaps im pushing the game to far towards industrialization

I would also like to suggest perhaps giant skeletons/buried bones that span multiple tiles? :D

Oil has been suggested many times, plastics would be right out, since the first i believe was created 1900-1920, and DF is apparently set in the 1300's?
I do like the idea of fossils though, just for a bit of flavour  :D

Fossils are good.

Oil comes from plankton and other aquatic microorganisms, but the two are not mutually exclusive.

However this is a very common suggestion and for future reference it is best to link to the first post about an idea, Just for readability of the forums =)

Anyhow, yeah oil is a good idea, there are alot of pitfalls with it that were discussed in another thread, but yes, I would like to see it, and methane gas as well.   (BP had "FUN" happen in the gulf.)

Would be useful when lighting comes into play.

Things like lamps, torches, or other fires for light would require fuel. You could render fat into lamp oil, or if there is oil on the map that could also be used as a fuel source for the fire.

Aside from that and sealing the bottom of ships oil really had no use and almost no value until the industrial revolution. Since there are no ships in the that game could use tar sealant to keep from leaking, its pretty much just fuel for lamps.

To be serious, it needs to wait for improved fluids, and then it's easy.

But NO use? Just fuel for lamps? You could barrel and coke it. You could make burning traps. You could drown nobles in it....

Its's true that a pre industrial HUMAN society has little use for crude, but these are DWARVES we're talking about.

Ships will exist soon
When Toady has done the work
Sealant or drowning.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

The ships of donkey hoof travel like a warm dream of tomorrow.
God, Adventure!
Storms, ocean.
Where is the good toady?
Spikes of pitchblendes menaces like dead spikes of cow bones.

Though more seriously, perhaps it's more era-appropriate to be making use of plant extracts for oil, and using oil for lighting and greek dwarven fire.

I imagine going whaling in DF will not end well.

I like the idea of oil/fuel/fossils etc.
But first, dwarfs need to control fire.

They control magma without. Im sure they can manage OIL.

'Pressurized' underground OIL reservoirs (really like a magma pipe but pressurised to the ground z-level + 1) has great BP-class Fun potential.

Does Dwarf Fortress even have a prehistory lengthy enough to facilitate the existence of oil? And what would those fossils be of?

Remember, not all oil is bitumen.

There's petrified wood to be found in layers deep underground.  So, yes.

The geology is a bit patchy as is, I would not take it as concrete evidence.
