I'll be honest, I haven't read your entire post...when hit with walls of text I counterattack with skimming. But about LoTR...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yqVD0swvWU
and also I have Warcraft 3 TFT. But I am terrible at it. My friend and I have been playing for a few months and we have won once, and that was in a Risk game.
I agree with your opinions on copyright...all kinds of copyrights should expire much faster and the property become public domain.

Yeah, I don't enjoy most RTS's either for the same reason. It seems like people just choose from a handful of basic strategies and then it's all a matter of who can click faster. I have come across games that kind of have an army controlled a-player-to-a-unit...but very simple and I'm too lazy to look up. Turn-based is much better (I still suck at them though), I enjoy messing around with Dominions.

I read most of that until the rambling on about RTS or whatever, which I skimmed through. Then I read the copyright part. I suggest using paragraphs next time! Not just one line between them, but two.

Like this.
Not this.

It really helps, I assure you.

As for books: Have you considered reading His Dark Materials? It's a great trilogy, really. It's a fantasy series primarily -- the first book sets up the setting, so it's probably the worst of the three. The second was my favorite, though the third was good too. Stay far away from the movie adaptation (The Golden Compass).

I also enjoy playing around with Dominions; usually I'll just tech up my god to ridiculous levels then crush the world and all of my opposition with just him.

Everything is explained in the sequels. It's a typical fantasy explanation, but it works well enough. If you've already read The Golden Compass then I'd recommend The Subtle Knife -- it's much better. The reveal (what 'dust' really is) is pretty good.

The spaces helped quite a bit, though some paragraphs are still pretty long! I try to stick to a rule of 4-5 lines per paragraph lest it becomes an unnavigable jumble of words, but it varies depending on screen size. Generally seeing large walls of text with no proper breaks drives potential readers away.

I just don't want to worry over whether or not I did something right if the game never tells me if it's right or not.
This is probably the only point I disagree with you on when it comes to RPGs. While the completionist part of me screams and wants to know the ramifications of my choices, the roleplayer in me knows that not knowing is what makes them choices. Knowing how my actions will affect the story leads to a sort of powergamer mentality. "I want outcome <x> and I'll do anything to get it, even if it means acting unrealistically."

I agree with that huge wall of text on so many levels.

Also, a couple of points on the game front:
-I see you have baldur's gate. Get its sequel+expansion. It's more than worth it.
-I would similarly reccomend the game Escape velocity:Nova by ambrosia software. Not only is it very open in what you can do (including siding with the baddies), but it allows for a good RPing experience, and the plotlines (there are six major ones, and many minor ones) are exceptionally well written.
-You mentioned that games that are old enough should become free. I would reccomend that you research abandonware.

The main storyline is kind of sucky, but the subquests are really neat.

hooooly shit

On a note... well, related to some part of that monstrous thing anyhow, I find that playing 'proper' DnD around a table kind of impedes me from roleplaying properly. I play it on IRC with some friends, and focus mostly on roleplaying rather than acquiring mad loot. You change your nick, have a second OOC channel running, and bam. Throw in a dicebot in the OOC channel and you can usually actually copy the log of the in-character channel after a session and have a good 'episode' of the campaign in a way.

For books I would suggest looking into World War Z and The Zombie Survival Guide. The Zombie Survival Guide is so well written, it will mess with your head to the point where, by the end, you will be seriously thinking about how to survive during a zombie outbreak. World War Z is by the same author, and also very well written. It's written in a documentary/interview/report style which is pulled off really well. It describes a worldwide zombie outbreak, gives you the entire picture of worldwide politics due to the spread of zombies, all in the perspective of interviews of various people about the event.
