I've freshly embarked, and I started out with a marksdwarf with hunting skill enabled .. I made sure the hunting labor was active, he has a crossbow, I made some wooden bolts, and I added ammunition under the m->f->hunters category.  But he's just sitting around and not going and grabbing a stack of ammo to hunt with.

Anything I'm missing, or do I just need to wait until he gets off his arse?

Ranged weapons are currently broken and nonfunctional.  The best way of 'hunting' is to train a soldier or two, and station them next to the intended prey.  They will attack any animals that are close to them, then you can have the corpses hauled to a refuse pile near a butcher.  The rest is mostly automated.

Dang..  In my previous fort, Goblins used them quite effectively against me.    hehe

Oh, it bears mentioning that your opponents can still use ranged weapons. It's just your dwarves that will have issues.

Though the damage of said weapons has been significantly cut, so they're mostly useless anyhow.

Does he have a quiver?

Both my hunters hunt.  I got them in my 3rd immigration wave and just let them do their business.  They like to waste their bolts on groundhogs though when there's perfectly good camels wandering about...

Hrm - he's hunting now.  At some point after I assigned him to a squad.

Hunting works, it's just Marksdwarves that are completely broken. After assigning ammo, remove their Hunting task, wait a few seconds, and re-assign them. As far as I know, an arsenal dwarf isn't needed, at least when the arse-dwarf isn't available.
