Amusing quote in Civ V trailer
« on: June 17, 2010, 08:44:09 pm »

So, I'm watching the Civ V trailer that came out yesterday and one of the designers said this:

"A lot of times in the here and now it can be depressing and you can get a lot of bad news... and no one wants to play a game where things are good and they get worse."

So... sounds like it's not for us.  :D

I think something went wrong with the mac download. All I know is, there's an exe in it, and that just ain't right.

LOL, yeah, me too - I can still remember finding ways to reach DOS in high school so we could play CIV 1 during study hall.  :)

But that line immediately made me think of DF.  This weekend I spiraled from 130 dwarves to 6 (only 3 of which were adults) in 1 season.  Then... an ambush, curse them! I just left the door opened and started planning out the next fort.  :D

I missed the first one, but started out with Civilization II.

I'm having a hard enough time beating the Noble difficulty in Civ IV, do I really want to give that up and learn a whole new system in Civ V?

Reminds me of a video in which Sid Meiers discussed the big mistakes he made during development of Civ 1. Things that never made it in. One of them was the idea that you would have rises and falls. Your civilization would grow then bad things would happen and eventually shrink then you'd grow again. The problem was people reloading an old save just before things started to get better again. Makes me wonder if the reason that kind of behaviour is less common in DF is because you don't have an old save. Well unless you savescum.

Oh yeah baby, you know you like it.  Now stop crying and get in my lungs.
Boil your penis. I'm convinced that's how it happened.

I'm pretty sure part of it is just a different mentality.

My sister played Civ 1 and 2 like, eight yearsd ago, and out of a frisson of nostalgia, I downloaded the first.

So. Good.

Rhye's And Fall of Civilization is pretty epic for this. It's next to impossible to hold onto your civ for much longer than historically accurate. (Still possible, though.) The Roman Empire has it the worst.

it is awfully unlikely to survive as roman empire... much less trying to keep it at its peak. france, spain, germany, perhaps england will most likely spawn in your lands.

egyptians have a much easier time I found... In 1920 I still am a strongish regional power. Rapidly losing my status as a world power however, as many others colonize the world. ( something which I can't really afford).

It is a quite good mod, I'll have to try more nations.
