Easy way to find a dwarf with a particular skill?
« on: June 17, 2010, 04:18:49 pm »

Is there an easy way to search for a dwarf with a particular skill?  Like if I want to find someone who is a mechanic is there any way to do that?

Also is there a way to search for people that are a certain Labor turned on?

just build a workshop and set a job for the skill going down the levels.
any dwarf that does the task has the skill (and the labor on)

The reason I want to find out is so I can figure out why a particular task is not being done.  So I can find out which dwarf is moving rocks instead of working in the mechanix shop.

I was hoping there would be an in game way of searching.  Does dwarf therapist work with DF open?

Once you start using Dwarf Therapist, you'll wonder how you ever played without it. I'll assign jobs to migrants as they come in, but if I need to assign anything after that, I use DF. Heck, I can even sort my dwarves via their skills.

the Visualizer Stonesense is what I use for megaconstructions, and Therapist looks promising for micromanaging skills.

I could never play DF without Therapist after discovering it. Before DT, I seriously didn't know you could even do that with labors.

Of course there's also the color-coding. A bright red dwarf will be a mechanic, siege op, or a pump op, so it's a quick way to guage what your dwarves are skillwise

What you're forgetting is that migrants often come with odd skill combinations. I had a Furnace Operator arrive a bit ago, but as he wasn't "High Master" in it, I went to turn the labor off. Then I saw "Accomplished Bone Doctor" under his skills, and he's been a doctor ever since. He wasn't labeled as one, so unless I had been using Therapist, I never would have seen that he was better for the Hospital than the refineries.

Kinda on the same subject.  Other than turning of certain tasks is there any way you can prioritize tasks?  Like thats fine if my carpenter moves stones and goods, but only if he doesn't have any carpentry to do.

Not yet, I think.  I believe there's some hardcoded priority levels, but we can't mess with them at all yet (certainly not at the level of an individual dwarf).  That seems like something that would go on the Eternal Suggestions Voting.
