Laptop Charger Bent
« on: June 17, 2010, 03:58:10 pm »

[insert long string of obscenities here]
I dropped my laptop. This has put my (third) charger in a dangerous position.
Here's a pic:

As you can (or can't) see, the metal tip is bent. And I have no clue what to do about it. The laptop still charges if I put it in, but not if I turn it around to a few positions. Or bump it out a tiny tiny bit.

So..what should I do about it? Leave it and fiddle with it when it stops charging?
Attempt to bend it back?
Throw my laptop charger at the wall and try to get a new one?

...I am really sick of getting new laptop chargers. I break them like once every couple years.

...Its not a complicated electronical device YOu can easily make a new one yourself, replace the bent part with naything other, or just bend it back.

The last one had this problem too, I tried to bend it back and it fell apart.

And I suck at electronic stuff. What would I replace the tip with?
It has different voltages depending on which tip you place on it (it's a universal charger. This is what the box says.)..so I'd worry about making my computer explode.

It's a piece of metal.  You could buy another charger for $20 I guess.

I suggest buying a new charger and stop dropping your laptop.

I try not to drop it. I've dropped it...twice. From a bunk bed the first time. (Yet nothing broke that time. Amazing.)

It's a HP Pavillion dv2000.
I bet I could get a replacement tip for the charger for relatively cheap, I'll have to call the company about it.

Maybe don't use it on the bunk bed?

I don't usually. Usually I use it on the desk that is the bottom part of the bunk bed. (Does it even qualify as a bunk bed, then?)
But I felt like laying down...never used it up there since :P

I'm surprised it survived. HP pavillions have the sturdiness of something made of wet newspapers and eggshell. The motherboard of my DV6whatever died three times in two years, and it pretty much always sat on its desk.

I've noticed.

I've had this one since 3 or 4 years. The only problems I've had are:
a.) The DVD drive CAME OUT. To this day it still sticks out a half inch, but it still works.
b.) I've gotten 3 different chargers.

Really glad I haven't had that bad of a problem though. I should probably get a backup hard-drive though.

I've had a dv6500, and the tip will eventually come out; it's happened to me a few times. With a bit of electrical tape, some wire strippers, possibly a touch of solder, and a little work, you can repair it on your own fairly easily.

And HP's chargers and the ones made in China suck.

When my old laptop of 6 years had a power cord failure (and I was on my second battery), I just got a universal one at the store. Still use it, in fact. Just swapped out the end to fit the new machine :P.

It's a really nice one too, you can plug it into a cigarette lighter socket or an airplane. I could probably get a replacement plug-end and modify it to hook straight up to a lead-acid battery too.

I dunno, you guys have survived Thomas the tank engine, golems, zombies, nuclear explosions, laser whales, and being on the same team as ragnarock.  I don't think something as tame as a world ending rain of lava will even slow you guys down.

1. Stick the cable into the laptop.
2. Apply duct tape
3. Watch as the charging continues.
4. Celebrate your new desktop computer!

1. Find trailer park
2. Drive around until someone throws out a computer
3. Grab
4. Install new HD
5. Celebrate your new desktop computer (which smells like a burning tobacco field).
