did anyone ever finish American Revolt?  man that game was hard, I could never do more than a couple missions.  And as for the original, it has got to win some sort of prize for the worst ending to the best game ever.

I'd love to see some sort of remake or spiritual successor to these.

Because it is? Abandonware is technically illegal in america's crappy protectionist laws. Just because nobody is pressing charges against them, doesn't mean it's not illegal.
It's got pretty much the same status as soft drugs drugs in Holland. Technically owning it is illegal, but nobody will sue you over it...

To be honest, this is actually a game I didn't like all that much.  I recognized that it was cool, but the controls weren't my thing.  Mostly the economy and research felt like a less-fun X-Com.

Well, the survival rate was a lot higher, for one thing.

I used to fail missions just to see that cinematic where the Executive gets pissed and throws a lamp through the LCD screen. He was like impotent rage personified.

Where does it fall on the spectrum of savescum vs. not savescum?  I mean...  If you're trying to play a serious game of X-Com and somebody dies, it's a no-brainer that you're not going to reload.  But you get no respect if you always scum to keep from losing any guys.  (MAYBE it's okay if you got nuked on turn 1 with two blaster bombs to your transport that killed everyone.)  If you're playing something like...hell, I don't know, but Planescape Torment could let characters permanently die in some circumstances, and even a hardcore player would reload.  Jagged Alliance 2 is somewhere in the middle, because if 2/3 of your entire hired force gets screwed over by some bad luck (enemy flanks you from off the map etc), well, the game is kind of a wash if you don't reload.

I mean, what's the general etiquette on savescumming in Syndicate?

Being single-player, do what you wish.  But from my limited experience, you usually either lose everyone or nobody.

But you start with lots of spare bodies, and a few more come in as you succeed in missions.  Losing the money you invested into the bodies is upsetting, but you can usually play without savescumming for losing a few soldiers.  From what I recall, they don't get better with time.

Losing missions is probably a good reason to reload.

In my experience, losing a body just means that you just have to spend more money onto a second body. Money will automatically come if you wait, and if you use the Persuadatron on the guards, you'll have a ton of bodies to spare.

Though I think savescumming is fine, if only to avoid all that time waiting for your money to come in.

Just donwloaded it. Looks good. I have a problem with the menus (not the combat part), where the top of the screen is shown at the bottom. Anyone had this problem before or know a fix?

Well, one of the biggest differences between Syndicate and X-Com is that your starting agents in Syndicate are already capable of slaughtering their way through an entire town, provided there aren't any rival agents around. Savescumming shouldn't be that necessary, unless you walk right into a minigun ambuscade.

yeah, that was fun too.  it was a more linear story, though.  I liked the random globe-hoping nature of the first game.  I would compare it to (the original 1989) Mechwarior, or MW2:Mercenaries where you pick your destination and mission at your whim, salvaging gear to buy upgrades.

clearly there is a big difference between a first-person gaint robot game, and a sqad based tactical.  I guess i liked the logistics and freewheeling mercenary nature of it the most.

Syndicate Wars wasn't bad, I had it on PS1(dunno about a PC version). Especially fun was bombing a bank, then stealing the money. And just about everything was blow-upable.
