Increased protection for herbalists, woodcutters, magma
« on: February 09, 2008, 01:21:00 pm »

Now that pretty much every hostile civilization ambushes, it'd be nice to be able to give armor to dwarves who are doing jobs in potentially hostile environments.

My suggestion is to allow assigning the armor level to any dwarf. They wouldn't spar with guards or soldiers, but the ability to give my hunters who fight tigers and metalsmiths who fight fireimps some armor would vastly increase their survivability.

Also the ability to assign guards to a dwarf or location. Primarily to protect the vital areas and dwarves in the fort. (giving hunters a few speardwarf/marksdwarf guard escorts so they can do their jobs without dieing, escorts for my woodcutters and herbalists, or assigning a bunch of guards at the fort entrance and magma vent)

Bodyguards are an excellent idea, you could designate for them to follow a specific dwarf, usually a noble.

Regarding

you can already do something like this by setting the patrol zone of a military squad.

I'm thinking of hunting parties actually. Where the guards would follow the hunter  to help bring down a large herd of elephants. (1 hunter leading 10 spear/marksdwarf guards) or where the guards would protect the herbalists/woodcutters while they do their thing outdoors since goblin and kobold ambushes have become so deadly in the recent version.

Stationing active military dwarves is not the same thing though, that requires active management of the dwarves so they don't go insane or bezerk from being active too long.

There just should be an option for assigning x number of guards to dwarves and setting up "guard posts" where guards would naturally stand. As it is, guards mostly gather in the main dining hall or meeting hall which is useless. Most experienced players just don't use guards for that exact reason.

Guard patrols and stations aren't enough?  Really?

I agree with this. Because, really, these are the sort of things the Fortress Guard should be doing, not the military.

Yes. Really. They are not enough because THEY DO NOT EXIST.

Simple concept as follows:

MILITARY patrols and stations exist.

GUARD patrols and stations do NOT exist.

Ok?

*SPOILER WARNING*

Your military can secretly function as guards. But you didn't hear it from me.

I think it'd make sense to be able to assign at least leather armor to non-military dwarves...

Obvious warning: You're saying that guards are broken and to micromanage using the military.

It's also like saying "traps can secretly function as guards, but you didn't hear it from me"
or
"locked doors can secretly..."
or
"moats can secretly..."

Guards should guard the dwarves, entrances, and valuables of the fort, they're the passive defense of the fort with a minimal amount of micromanaging on the part of the player.

Military on the other hand are the active part of the defense of the fort, used on the direct action of the player.

I agree, guard patrol points should be implemented.
