I liked how it was told from the squirrel's point of view ;p  The elves were kind of uninteresting, but the owl and Root I liked!

This was the first threetoe story I've read and I must say I'm impressed. Two thumbs up.

I like these elves a bit better, now. They are really more distinct from the animalpeople.

I liked it a lot, it made me wish there were things like forest spirits in DF. My only complaint would be that it is a little confusing what happens in the sacred grove with Root. I think that is part of the point, but I think it should be a little clearer. Otherwise, I thought it was great.

Game mechanics-wise I imagine what would happen was actually that Root and the princess would go into a Trance state, and if the player had been the Root character, would have experienced it as a conversation screen with added descriptions. I don't think an actual, physical grove might have been involved. As the Trance state ends, Root would change body from Squirrel to Squirrelman.
Alternatively, if the grove was a real, physical location, Root and the princess would go into the trance and be unconscious while walking/moving to the grove (likely directed by the forest spirit), regain consciousness again but remain in trance, converse with the forest spirit, and then awaken from the trance.

I like stories that give more personality to DF's elves. Despite the hate they get, fleshing out their roles in a living world is challenging and entertaining.

I like the bit of exploration into the elven site's culture and their personalities in this one.

One thing that Toady's analysis didn't mention: The squirrel appears pretty sapient/intelligent even as a plain old red squirrel. This opens up a pretty big can of worms. After all, animals acting intelligent is a common fantasy thing, but how do you simulate that in a game like DF? How do you decide which of your regular forest animals are intelligent, and under which conditions? Obviously, a regular red squirrel, even in DF, won't consistently act like that in all cases, so I think this deserves some analysis and speculation.

Nice one, liked a lot! A bit too brutal and bloody for my taste. Happy ending was nice. Drunk elves are a new thing for me. Definitely i will read more :)
P.s i took some food, some drinks, good seat and enjoyed the story without any hesitation.
