Ninja Aqizzar: Nobody in their right mind would put a broom across their basement staircase, though.

A) The broom fell across the doorway in the night.  That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

OR B) You haven't met the average slob, who might leave things anywhere, especially if they don't go down those stairs very often.  And even then, the people who live it the house know about the broom, and step over it in anger.  Why are you trying to defend the story?  I thought you were pissed about it.

The broom in this case isn't lying there. It's suspended a foot above the floor, right in the doorway, on special hooks that are meant to hold it up. In tripping range!

I'm not angered by the story, by the way. I'm just defending the probability of suing for it.

It serves as a spot to wipe your shoes, and keeps pets from exiting the basement when placed down there.

Here we don't have guns...so we just have to do the pressure plate releasing magma trick.

And that folks, is why the home defense plan based on firearms is a much better alternative.

Although, depending on where I currently am situated, I might be reaching for a knife before the gun.

The other night my Hamster knocked something open. Thinking it was a burglar, I popped open the black case containing the knife my grandma had given me for my thirteenth birthday (I was a boy scout) and crept down the stairs like a badass.

But there was nobody there, so I went back.

Thinking about it later, it seemed like the little knife (it's maybe a one or two-inch long blade) was a better choice than a pistol, at least in my house which doesn't offer much maneuver room. It's not likely to actually kill anybody unless I get a really lucky(?) stab, but it is maneuverable and quick enough to scare the guy off as I scream and stab. With a gun, however, he could just hit me or knock it out of my hand before I could point it at him. Also, I won't damage anything behind him (though, I would probably need new carpeting either way).

Question: would it still be illegal if you put up clear warning signs?

Yes. You can warn people very loudly that you are about to do something illegal and if you do it you'll still be arrested. In fact, since setting traps in your home is illegal, it would get you caught faster if you advertised the fact.

Also, putting up warning signs rather defeats the point.

I'm actually interested in the cage trap idea. If your alarm locks the intruder in a room with, just for arguing reasons, a room with bottled water, food, and a toilet, is it a legitimate, legal trap you could use?

Just make sure they're lethal fire traps.

This was what I was thinking.
Really, it isn't letal, doesn't harm them at all, either.

Why is it illegal to set traps, but not to keep a vicious guard dog?

Wait, is setting up a trap in your home illegal though? Or does it have to be lethal? Because if it setting up any trap is illegal then yeah, a cage trap would obviously be illegal.

Wouldn't the cage trap situation fall under "deprivation of liberty" (that's what my translated told me it was the equivalent, so I'm not sure it's the right term though)? You're basically kidnapping the burglar. I don't think that, even if someone enters your house with ill intent, you're allowed to keep him imprisoned there against his will :D
