My state, Colorado, has a "Make my Day" law. It is perfectly legal to kill someone who breaks into your home EVEN IF THEY INTEND NO VIOLENT ACT.(It only has to be a criminal act.)

Yes, if you break into my house to steal my computer monitor, I can stab you 532 times in the left leg alone and not face criminal prosecution as long as you never made it out of my house. That means I don't even have to go to court to prove anything.

People in my state repeatedly try to get it extended to businesses. Even if it was though, this still would not have helped Philip Connaghan, since it still doesn't protect the right to use booby traps.
The thief's life was worth 7,000$.

More than $9500 worth of stuff was stolen from this guy's garage though, and a good burglar alarm would have probably cost him that. I'd say 6 years probation and $9500 was worth the effect it had on thieves in the area and the elimination of one who was ripping this guy off. If you are going to steal, you shouldn't be allowed the protection of the law when in the act.

I don't believe there's any state in the US where it's not legal to kill someone who breaks into your house, and there are some that extend it to "are on your land at night".

That would be very, very difficult to pull off (I'm thinking bloodstains, signs of struggle at the scene, no signs of struggle at your house), but yeah, I guess so. Scary thought.

If the Tru Crime shows are any indication, they'll find your semen and blood all over the area, and reenact the murder and transportation proving that the corpse had to have been manhandled into the position you claimed it was in.

Depends on the actions, the circumstances, and the definition of "manhandling".  I mean, I assume if the guy fell on you when he died, you don't have to wait for the investigator and coroner to take pictures before you throw him off.  Set him up in an easy chair, Weekend at Bernie's style?  Probably not.

But let's say you invite them in then shoot them in the head with a shotgun, then maybe break your own door's lock.  It's gonna be pretty hard to establish exactly what happened.

Even worse if it's on your grounds... it'd be even harder to prove if they actually broke in.  "Hey, he was in my garden, so I shot him"...
