So the ban on D&D in US prisons has been upheld.

Apparently the authorities see D&D as a threat that would cause gangs to form and likely inspire prisoners to "level up" by gaining "EXP points" IRL from shanking imates with their "+2 daggers".

You suppose they can still play home brew paper+pen games? Seems like you'd have a lot of free time to do some awesome campaigns when locked up in the joint

Here's the thread if it matters.

On one hand, I see how this seems silly and stupid. On the other, I frequently want to punch Chaotic Bullshit roleplayers. I really can see someone who's already committed murder committing another murder over DnD. Hell, people get shot over cards often enough.

Federal prisons are legally obligated to provide fake and/or animal blood for Satanists to practice their observances, so as not to curtail their religious freedom.  You can get all the six-sided dice you want, because it's not like you have anything else to do besides gamble for cigarettes.  But apparently if you try to combine stuff that kinda looks like those two things, and add in a little make-believe, all Hell breaks loose.

I'll admit, I'm surprised that Dungeons & Dragons has a significant enough incarcerated-fanbase to generate Federal Appeals Circuit cases.  If I were a prison warden, I'd be totally on board for D&D behind bars.  Gangs are gonna form anyway, let them meat out their grievances on the table-top instead of the in the laundry room.  I can just picture the inter-cell violence getting all meta.

I randomly got the idea of prisoners playing Maid RPG.

They already do that.  And they don't use dice.

Don't you get sent to prison in the USA for possession of pot? All them stoners need something to do when they aren't busy becoming hardened criminals. :p

1. Inmates would get a fight over "YOU FUDGED MY DICE ROLLS" and kill each other for realz.
2. Inmates would go all "OMG NERDS" and kill D&D players.
3. Inmates would fantasize some guy as being a slender warrior elf and rape him.
4. Someone would play a Lawful Good paladin, and the inmates would kill the player for being a cop.

Yeah, D&D is dangerous. You might think that it doesn't make sense, but let's not forget that a lot of criminals aren't very bright.

So my uncle was a coronor and a university instructor for morgues. Guy came in from State stabbed to death with a ballpoint pen. Uncle's like, "This guy was stabbed to death seventy eight times with a ballpoint pen," the students were like, "Uh, that looks like way more than seventy eight times," and he's like, "Look, I figure he was dead after the seventy eight in the left leg. This guy's closed casket anyway."

So what is it after they're dead? Post-gallows humor?

Don't be stupid, where would a prison inmate get access to a computerized random number generator? Foolish, foolish idea.

I'll admit, I'm surprised that Dungeons & Dragons has a significant enough incarcerated-fanbase to generate Federal Appeals Circuit cases.

All that is needed is one pissed off inmate with a lot of time on his/her hands with access to the law books that are provided by any prison or jails law library.

So, I guess he was the Clarence Gideon of hammer-murdering nerds.  I wonder what his group was like, or if he'll ever get a publishing deal for that 96-page setting bible he wrote.
