Subject binges and dreaming
« on: June 14, 2010, 07:59:37 am »

Lately I've noticed if I take a couple of days and subject myself to a particular thing, it will show up in my dreams, often multiple times over the next few days. I originally tested this for the Tetris effect, with promising results. Other things that caused this to happen was when I first learned how to close the grill at Wendys and spent three straight nights doing it, taking a two day DF fest and dreaming in ascii, and most recently, binging the two seasons of SWAT Kats, causing dreams of flying in a jet, taking a couple of days to revisit Mechassault resulted in mech piloting dreams, and usually after a weekend of distribution center work I'll have warehouses incorporated in them.

Does being inundated with a specific subject for a short two day burst do this to you guys? Could you combine this with lucid dreaming for kickass experiences?

If you lucid dream you can do all that anyway.

Although you SHOULD try to get this effect from binging reading about philosophy and post-modernism and lucid dreaming! (Reading abaut ONLY lucid dreaming for 2 days might get boring.)

Seeing as my job tends to get boring to the point of being able to sleep with my eyes open, I can lucid dream while awake. Probably why I can essentially play God when I dream or slide between alternate realities when asleep, or come up with bizarre ideas while still awake.

Tried it while sick though, it doesn't help. You know, alternate realities, still sick between all of them. Not missing much.

Dreams are simply your brain processing the information from the day.

Do it with Silent Hill.
This is an excellent idea.

It happens to everyone for fucks sake.

If i play DF for too long i have what i call 'stress dreams' where i keep replaying the same thing OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN. ALL FUCKING NIGHT. Fucking dorfs, HAUL THE FUCKING WOOD. MICRO MANAGE OUT THE ARSE. I see their little faces smiling at me with such evil, i just want to slaughter each and every one of the bastards.

I used to work as a glass collector when i was younger and i really threw myself into the role. I would make up techniques for washing and picking glasses, etc. I cant remember a time when i DIDNT dream of glasses surrounding me on tiny little shelves on the walls, ceiling and everywhere.

Happens with porn too but they are less stressful.

I find a combination of immersive video game storyline and dehydration before bed has odd results. This usually is the result of being so immersed in a game that you don't drink as much water as usual, then go to bed. The immersion leads your brain to be constantly stuck on whatever game it was, and the dehydration seems to combine with that a bit of hallucination, usually making you think you actually are the character in said game. Although it definately is NOT fun. You wake up in the middle of the night dehydrated and half delirious until you get up and drink several glasses of water. Since the first few times it happened I have learned to drink a lot of water after playing a really immersive rpg for the first time, which seems to counteract it.

I seem to drink a lot of soda while I'm immersed in video games, which may help with dehydration, or it may just make it worse.

Reading philosophy books probably wouldn't do this, as the information is factual, and not appealing to the senses.

Haven't really taken a day for porn binges, but I'm sure that would make some excellent dreams, granted you're not in a twisted state of mind.

I'm not sure what Silent Hill is, but I've heard of it and would like to experience it, and I'm sure it would blend in very peculiarly with the latter.

Any other suggestions that would go great with this, or could facilitate the process? Would blending subject matter make for more interesting results?

The other night i had a wierd combo dream, it was in a STALKER setting, me being some agent sneaking around a la Sam Fisher and then escaping from some ruins(dunno where this is from), also a cute blonde. The wierdest thing is that i remeber saving the dream(probably a reflex from STALKER) then abruptly waking up, checking something on the computer then going back to bed to continue the same dream, this happened several times trough the night.

Are you familiar with E.M. Cioran?  Silent Hill is his philosophy made 'real'.  It's a video game series.  Get Silent Hill 2 and play it, taking extra care to notice all the symbolism in it.  Do this for a few days, then sleep.

My friend has the original Silent Hill, and may have the second one, so I'll certainly take that in consideration.

Be careful.  It's a pretty nasty place/idea.

I've noticed this, but it always seems to have a delayed impact in my dreams. For example, I gave DMC4 a good week not too long ago...but only in the last few days did I have a dream about the most awesome sword fighting game ever. It made me sad. :( I actually woke up and my first instinct was to hit the Internet to track down the name of said game. Then my head cleared and I remembered I'd only dreamt it.

I think it's more profound when you hear about something new, like an actor or a new word, and you suddenly see and hear it everywhere in day to day life.
