The legal name of the sport is "Association Football"

"Soccer" comes from the word assocation.

That's so stupid. There's a reason most of the world calls it football. It is because a ball is hit with the feet.

You can blame Oxford.  Rugby also became "rugger"

At least us Americans don't stereotype everyone like all of the foreigners. Humans are just silly.

Are... are you saying Americans don't stereotype?

Excuse me while I laugh outrageously.

Pardon, but are you stereotyping that Americans stereotype?

Pardon me while I laugh spitefully.

The implication was that everyone stereotypes, not that only Americans do :P

It looks like a series of people all missing the point of the previous poster and making themselves look like idiots. Let's dissect:

Barbarossa was being tongue in cheek when he said 'at least Americans don't stereotype like them foreigners'.

Retro either missed that or tried to expand on Barbarossa's joke and said "Yeah, well, Americans are all about stereotype". Intentional irony.

Nikov missed the point entirely, unwittingly explained the joke, and laughed spitefully.

This is how I see it. Any other explanation I can think of involves everybody being stupid.

Hockey. I don't care if I'm playing into the stereotype. Hockey is awesome.
Well, I guess you're kinda right. Except for the whole man-children starting fights over nothing, or because they're losing the match -part of the sport.
(No, I couldn't let it go completely ;) )

Admittedly, I was hoping for you to reply with Baseball or American Football, only so that I could bring up the American "tendency" to enjoy sports/stuff in short bursts of excitement; and thereby question their sexual ability. :D
edit: dammit, why did I explain a joke I hadn't even made yet, and why in such a dry manner?

The ball is also hit with the feet in American Football. The major difference is which of the two sports named football we call football. Seeings how most people prefer football, there's no sense changing the name now that everyone understands what 'soccer' is. I believe that the word 'soccer' was invented by the Brits, anyhow.

In American football one hardly ever hits the ball with the foot, hence our confusion.

It's more alike to rugby, australian football and hybrids like gaelic football, all of which are played without the excessive wussy-armor, and yet have similar rules to tackling. Manly men sports. (except for one girl I know who plays gaelic in a mens team, but she kicks the ass of guys twice her size. For fun.)

Most people, or most Americans?

I hadn't heard of American Football until I played Gridiron in P.E. about four years ago.

Different sports. Although I do question the amount of armor you guys put on. You're not going to war guys, come on, man up.

Ah yes, the eternal debate. Is being repeatedly bludgeoned about the head dangerous to the participants?

Whoops! Most Americans is what I meant. I meant to say 'most people I know much about', meaning Americans.

I do question the amount of armor you guys put on. You're not going to war guys, come on, man up.
It's mainly because of the horrible injuries people can get. Even with the helmets and such, Football can pulverize your brain and body.

Ah yes, there is the mass tackling. I forgot about that, that doesn't really happen in Rugby.

Now let's wait for the US to lose against Algeria and Slovakia, giving a repeat of 2006.

I think you need to find a video to show how awful the goalkeeping was, for those who didn't watch that match. That was one of the most "WTF" moments of this world cup, aside from Switzerland scoring last night :D
